Had my sell mask fix today, what a scary thing…

can’t stop crying..,,

  • It is a scary looking thing. Did you ask them to cut eyeholes in it? It’s actually not that bad getting clipped onto the treatment table and you do get used to it. The longest I was ever under the Linac was ten minutes. I just watched what happened but some folk took in their own music to listen to or imagined a favourite walk or holiday. The time soon goes.

  • Hi one thing I did to prepare my self was to take myself into our bedroom set the timer for 12 minutes. Tgrn I woujd tsje my head off on a favourite bike ride or walk I woujd in my head di the journey including coffee stops. I also did a music playlist we  were slowed to take our own c d s in. Honestly you get  intio a rhythm with it all. The mask is a necessity to get through treatment I treated her like a friend and I gave her a name Venizia after  Venice the home of the masked ball.
Take it all one day at a time baby steps.

  • Hi Basbas - I had my mask made today too and it was a very strange experience I admit! I took my mind away from the room and recited the Lord's Prayer over and over (that's my way to meditate) and it worked for me. The team today said that this would be the longest I'd ever have to wear the mask and the radiotherapy days would be a lot shorter. Try whatever works for you - music, meditation, prayer, reciting lyrics from a song ..... focus on something outside yourself (and outside of the room!)  I'm sure we will find it very odd, but each day will probably get better and remember - it'll never be as long as the time that you had the mask fitted!

  • Hi Barbara - good news indeed, I'm so glad your spirits have been lifted a bit. It's a real journey we are on, but we'll get there. Just keep smiling and I will do the same. But if we had bad days, we can come on here and rant!

  • Hi Basbas,

I’m new to all this as well and was dreading the mask. I had my 4th session yesterday and it seems that my mind drifts off to have a little conversation with the ‘guest’ that this party was created for! Sounds mad but I tell it its days are numbered and it really is time to leave. I tend to utilise certain words that even my husband has never heard me say but they are quite therapeutic! As they say, the fitting will be longest you are ever going to wear it. Try to find something distracting to think about or maybe something will pop into your head once you are alone with your thoughts. Good luck and virtual hugs xxx
