Hello, it’s now 5 weeks after my chemo/radiotherapy first few weeks were horrendous with saliva and mucus which I no is a common side effect and has got a lot better with time .  I went for my first follow up appointment last week with Doctor and Diet / speech specialists said I was doing well at this stage but now need to learn to swallow again .  I currently have my 2nd NG feed tube ( 1st one got blocked )  and am hoping to swallow on my own to obviously get better.  However Doctor did look in my mouth and said I have some ulcers in throat and mouth  areas , apparently another side effect .  I have a bit of a niggling cough for few weeks which does bring up mucus all time and is making throat bit sore ,  have had antibiotics (possible chest infection?) but doesn’t seem to doing much also got mouthwash  . Has any one else had any of these problems ? Is still early days , but I just want to get rid of this tube and fend on my own,, Any advice would be very grateful . Thanks Ozzer

  • Hi Ozzer. Well done on completing treatment ulcers yes they are a bane of many if us. Even now 4 years I get ulcers due to new foods sometime. But yours are still from radiotherapy mine took at least 3 months to clear , I was prescribed gelclair which does help. As for n g tube I took decision to start swallowing ensures I had 6 a day that gave me 1800 calories which left me free to top up with bits if food. Have a conversation with your dietician mine said it was fine for me ti take n g tube out which I did at week 3. That forced me to swallow of course I like I said asked first at dietician review maybe speak to them? The radiation U.K. was so go I was still on pain killers as well. Plus a medication prescribed to numb the mouth oxcycetscaine suspension

start very soft foods, I use bioxtra as a mouthwash it’s very gentle

will post a link ti help  with food ideas. plus my blog might help below

  • Hi Ozzer. Yes those ulcers will hang around. I gargled with Difflam which helped a lot. My oncologist told me that if I could bear corsodyl that would help speed up healing. I managed every night and I must say the ulcers didn’t hang around for long. But do touch base with your team before  trying something new. Have you got swallow exercises to do?

  • Hi Beesuit , thanks for getting in touch , am trying a few exercises on swallowing when my mouth not so sore , shame about these ulcers as feel if these weren’t about the swallowing would be a bit more barable? Have another follow up appointment in few weeks so am sure will point me in right direction. Thank you  Ozzer

  • Hi Dani

just read this post, dod the corsodyl sting?? Did you dilute it?? Is cosodyl and difflam the same?? ThanksElaine

  • Hi Elaine. Corsodyl is Chlorhexidine. It’s an antiseptic. Kills all the horrid bacteria in your mouth. It’s very similar to Difflam and I think it’s just down to clinical preference. There are clinical trials to show that there’s not much difference in their efficacy

Yes it did sting but only momentarily. I used it undiluted last thing before bedtime.
