Hi all,
Its been nearly 8 weeks since I had my partial glossectomy on the left side of my tongue, the neck dissection was prosponed for now, because of other health issues, it would have been too much to handle all at once.
I did have an unexpected artery burst in my mouth and bleeding, when I woke up in recovery, so had an emergency 2nd surgery. I was in hospital for 9 days and felt I was so well looked after. All the NHS staff were amazing.
What I would like to know, when I have been for follow ups, I was told the 'pain' can take up to a couple of months to ease in the surgery area. My tongue is less painful now and closing up and healing well, it is still numb on the left side and thick looking. I was told it could be permanent because of the nerve damage.
The 'pain' that is still there, is below the back teeth gum and where the tongue attaches to the floor of the mouth. I am not sure if it is an infection, or just painful and will take time to heal. I did not have surgery there!
Has anyone had this, where it isn't healing 8 weeks later?
Unfortunately last week I caught covid from my husband, who was usually as careful as I am, but he caught it from a neighbour.
I am on the vulnerable list, so have had to have covid treatment at home, as I didn't want to go into hospital. Today is my last day on the treatment and 3 more days of isolation, so can't see the Dr regarding this 'painful area'. I will ring and discuss this with my GP on Monday though.
Just need some feedback, if this has happened to anyone else around the same area. I did start to eat soft foods recently, but because food gets caught in this area, and it is so very painful, I had to go back to liquid/puree diet, so I don't chew foods. So not sure if maybe food caused it!!!!!!
Thank you all so much to the people who helped prepare me for the surgery, since I came on here as a newbie.
You gave me the confidence to go through the surgery without fear, even though I had a bit of a mishap, I got through both surgeries. x
Hi Twilight60. Welcome back.
I am afraid I can't answer your specific question as although I have had 5 operations my partial glossectomy was aborted after 2 hours as they could no longer find the tumour. So I've not experienced exactly what you have.
I have had my tonsils removed and the lymph nodes in my neck removed via dissection. I did find that the 3 times they went into my tongue the recovery was easy - certainly compared to tonsils! It is a year since the last time and I still get discomfort in and around my tongue. Sometimes it feels swollen and I bite it when eating as a result. This is discomfort rather than out and out pain. I have found with other post surgery affects that time is a great healer.
I think you will find when you have your dissection that is relatively easy to recovery from, but come back to discuss possible side effects and coping strategies.
HI Peter,
Thank you for your comment, much appreciate any help. Maybe its just needs time to recover, and by the sound of things it can take a very long time.
I am having the ultrasound on my lymph nodes every 2 months to keep an eye on that area. I am in no fit state to have that done yet. I was told it was a 5 hour operation for neck dissection. How long were you in hospital having it done? Rose
Rose,
My surgeon was very bolshy about the neck dissection and tonsillectomy. Claimed he could do them in around 90 minutes. Actually I think he could as he was very skilled. In the end he took around 3 hours and had 3 other consultants come in as he could find no sign of the cancer and wanted a second, then third, then fourth opinion!!!
He took all in the lymph nodes below Level 2 in the end and I was in overnight with a tonsillectomy and neck dissection. Got home the following afternoon. No neck drain as he promised and quick recovery.
Hi,
Ok so no one really knows until they actually get in there to have a look around.
I am on antibiotics at the moment to see if that clears the pain area, but I don't think it will as its still the same and I only have 2 days to go on the antibiotics. Anyhow will see my Consultant and Oncology team next Tuesday, get them to have a good look around. Thanks for your feedback. Rose
