Hi I finished the Chemo and radiotherapy on 19th Jan.

On 22 March I had a full body PET CT scan and they wanted to take another biopsy of the tonsil area where the cancer was.

As my GP is on holiday I haven't got the results of the scan I am just going to the hospital to get them tomorrow.  The biopsy was planned for Monday but because we are in Germany they want to keep me for 4 nights. Due to the excessive Covid in our area I don't feel hospital is safe.

If the PET scan is clear would you postpone the biopsy till later in the summer?

Advise please?

Gregory

  • Hi Gregory and well done for getting through.

I had a PET/CT at 16 weeks which showed a hotspot at the original site of the cancer. I had a biopsy six weeks after which was clear.

I must say I would be led by my team. Why are they wanting a biopsy before even the PET/CT results are through? Why would they want a biopsy at all if the scan results are clear?

It all sounds a bit confusing

I wouldn't postpone anything my oncologist suggested but I would like to know why.

Sorry....this probably doesn't help at all

PS if it's Covid you are worried about I reckon it will get worse before it gets better and any vaccination immunity would have possibly waned considerably unless you get another booster in.

Thanks for replying. That was my question why do they want a biopsy 8 weeks after end of treatment when they say everything looks good and before the results of Scan are known?

  • I can't really answer your question, but I hazard a guess that your clinical team have visually seen something that they want to investigate.  Scans can only see down to a certain resolution.  If I recall correctly PET and CT scans seem to be around 4mm, MRI slightly better.  Clearly depends on the capability of the actual kit and they get better all the time.

My cancer was eventually found by visual observation as it only once indicated on a scan, despite being scanned by CT, MRI and PET/CT numerous times over 18 months.  For piece of mind I would go with it if recommended.  They are the experts.
