Hi everyone
I'd like to share some very good news with you. The PET scan result has determined that the "very large tumour" (the oncologist's description) that had spread from my left hand tonsil into the tongue base, saliva gland, and around the carotid artery, is GONE. There is no sign of cancer anywhere else in my body.
It's wonderful news and such a huge relief.
The regular monitoring meetings will commence shortly; fingers firmly crossed that these will somehow pick up on anything untoward. I'm mindful though that I had no symptoms of trouble the first time around and so I'm not sure how I'd/they'd detect anything new. Maybe someone can offer some insight, please?
Best wishes to everyone

Brilliant news and fingers crossed that it's gone for good and all, that really is the most likely outcome in my experience.
That said (as you ask), in my case, the warning sign (after getting five year all clear) was feeling a bit of a blockage in my throat and having consequent difficulty swallowing....but I got the short straw; I'm not sure what the numbers are like for recurrance but they're not big.
Enjoy your life but get straight back into the system if you feel something's amiss, always better to err on the safe side.
Metastatic SCC diagnosed 8th October 2013. Modified radical neck dissection November, thirty-five radiotherapy fractions with 2xCisplatin chemo Jan/Feb 2014. Recurrence on larynx diagnosed July 2020 so salvage laryngectomy in September 2020.
Hi GR10. Well done. It’s such a wonderful feeling after all the treatment suffered.
You might not have had symptoms but your oncologist doubtless could see your cancer with the scope that they give you.
When I was being monitored every six weeks to start with I had a nasoendoscope every time.
You may even be offered another scan at a year.
Don’t worry they will keep a close eye on you

That's great news GR10.
I finished treatment in August 2018 and still have a nasoendoscopy at each appt. Plus they'll have a good feel around everything. Anything you think is untoward between appts just contact your team and they will get you in to check things out.
All the best.

Good news! As has been said they really do look after you. My "reoccurrence" was totally unknown to me, but my surgeon spotted it really early. It is unlikely that it will come back, but just make sure you go to every check-up without fail and shout if you feel anything is wrong in-between check-ups.
Thank you so much Mike, Hazel, Dani, Linda, Peter and John for replying to the thread. It's reassuring to hear your thoughts and experiences.
I'm due to have the first monitoring meeting next week, hopefully I'll be able to attend. Unfortunately last week I went down with Covid after a weekend away; one of our first outings in many months. Someone was introduced to me by our friends and just as he began speaking to me he began to cough and sneeze. 4 days later so did I and tested positive the next day. My wife has since tested positive too. A week on and we're both under the weather still, taking things gently.
So our celebration for cancer recovery - 3 days in Cornwall - has had to be cancelled. Never mind, all being well there'll be another opportunity before too long.
Best wishes to everyone

You’re very welcome. We all help each other. I remember my early days and now giving others a hand is the least I can do
