Not posted for quite a while, as everything has been going well for my son. However, he is still getting recurring infections in the fistula. He's had 7 different courses of antibiotics and when the course is finished the infection comes back. He saw his consultant last week and it's been decided that, if the infections don't clear up he will need an exploratory operation to find the source of the infection. He will then have a small amount of plastic surgery to close the fistula. His consultant has said the operation won't be as invasive as before (thank goodness) He's just received a letter for a phone call, pre op assessment, so things are hopefully progressing. He's also waiting to have the feeding tube removed, it has been changed once as the first one was put in 8 months ago !! He's managing to eat now, but mostly soft foods. Depending when they operate, he is hoping to go back to work (working from home) mid March, but it will only be a few hours a week to start off with.
Thanks so much everyone for all your help and support, it's meant such a lot ot me and my family.
Live life to the full while you can, you never know what's around the corner.
Take care everyone
Janet
Hi janet.
Thanks for the update
Your son has come so far...well done
Now that he's eating soft foods it's only a matter of time for things to improve. It's a great step.
I hope they can sort the fistula. My first husband had one after his laryngectomy. They sealed it a few times with silver nitrate.....what awful things they did 35 years ago. I kept telling the surgeon it was a suture reaction and eventually when they operated to investigate they pulled out three inches of suture material....
Keep going, Janet. You have been marvellous for your son.

Thank you so much for your reply, gosh can't believe they used silver nitrate !! They've told my son they think it's some sort of sinus, so we will wait to see !!
Thanks again, everyone on here is so helpful and supportive. Take care and stay safe x

Thank you so much for your reply, gosh can't believe they used silver nitrate !!
I suppose the rationale behind that was to destroy the epithelial lining so that it could heal side to side

I'm so pleased to read your son is now able to eat soft foods. That must feel like real progress.
It sounds sensible to have an exploratory operation - hope the consultant can solve the issue of these repeated infections.
Do let us know how he gets on when you're able to.
All he best to you and your family.

Thanks Hazel, We're seeing him and his family this afternoon. As you said, let's hope the fistula gets sorted.
Take care and stay safe x

Thanks Linda, it's been an awful few months for us all, he's keen to get back to work, albeit only part time, but we all think it will be something for him to focus on. He will work from home as he's not allowed to drive at the moment, as he still has morphine patches. Hopefully they will start to wean him off them.
Thanks again, everyone on here has been a tremendous help with their messages of support. We really do appreciate everyone of you.
Take care and stay safe

Hi everyone, I've been a bit quiet of late on here. Just wanted to let you know, that my son has now had the feeding tube removed and is managing to eat a little more solid food. The fistula is still a problem, although the hospital has now decided (after 10 different lots of antibiotics) that it's not an infection. However his face and mouth are continually swollen. He has good days and bad days. Some days he can do things around the house etc, but then the next day he's not able to do anything. His consultant has been on holiday for two weeks, he's back in work Monday, so my son will try to speak to him to find out what they intend to do next. It's almost 12 months since he was diagnosed and he's at the stage now, where he feels frustrated that he can't lead a 'normal' life. His company have been very good to him, he has been on full pay for 9 months, but he feels that by not being able to get back to work, he's letting them down. When he does go back to work, it will obviously been from home and just a couple of hours or so a day, and gradually build that up.
As a family, we are all trying to support him and his wife and children as much as we can.
Thank you so much for all you messages of support, we do appreciate you all.
Take care of yourselves, and hug your loved ones.
Janet
