Recovery - when do I start to feel better?

So have endured six weeks of radiotherapy with two sessions of chemotherapy.

Have just completed my first week of six weeks of recovery. I feel extremely tired. Producing gallons of mucus/saliva which leads to bouts of Nausea.

I have also lost a lot of weight. Having five Ensure shakes via my PEG. I try the occasional bit of food. No taste no appetite.

Taking lots of pain killers.

when do you think I will start to feel better?

  • Pleased to hear you're now in the recovery stage of treatment.  Unfortunately these last few weeks are probably the worst time but on the plus side you should soon start to find some small improvements.  Most people feel they've really turned a corner at 12 weeks or so.

The fatigue may last for some time yet so it's best to just listen to your body and pace yourself.  A little gentle exercise can be beneficial too.

Keep at it and well done.

  • Hi Derry and welcome. Well done on getting through. The radiotherapy has a cumulative effect for two or three weeks after you finish so you have about another two weeks of rubbish to come. I remember I dozed practically all the time in the first two weeks after treatment ended

Its a generalisation but most of us start feeling a little better at six weeks and there is a definite corner turned at 12 with eating and taste slowly improving from around a month after treatment end.

It’s a day at a time still right now. Some days backwards

i would still take your pain killers by the clock but remember to wean yourself off slowly when the time comes.

I managed to eat a steak at 12 weeks. Couldn’t taste much but I was overjoyed. My appetite was poor till six months. I could easily have not bothered at all

Food is fuel. If you can swallow it get it down. It does get better I promise

It’s not easy but it does get better. Appetite takes time I used the mantra food is fuel.i used a humidifier in bedroom and a nebuliser to hell with mucus..Plus drum 2-3 litres of water either via ng tube or orally every day.
