  • Try sipping lots of water. 2 or 3 litres a day in small sips. Steam inhalation over a bowl of hot water mouth open can help too as can a nebuliser. There is a drug called carbocysteine that some people get but it doesn’t work for everybody. It’s supposed to thin mucous so that you can spit it out more easily. Keeping a humidifier in your bedroom can ease things at night time.
I managed with steam and spitting a lot.
It went fairly quickly and by six weeks I was practically clear  of it

  • Hi Wendy. I too had the thick secretions,I had a humidifier all night in bedroom.Plus the hospital ,loaned me a nebuliser which is used at leastb6 times day and night. I was  prescribed carbusistine to thin the secretions ,it did work but I was still constantly spitting or even putting fingers in my mouth ( not  pleasant but needs must ). Sipping soda water or flat Diet Coke or dry ginger can help if mouth can cope with it. I too tried to drink between 2-3 litres of water either orally or via ng tube. Thus phase will pass it won’t feel like it at minute, often it’s replaced with dry mouth which is another story.
I was  a little longer than Dani in getting rid if it ,I had 7 weeks radiotherapy and chemo.

  • Thank you Hazel

Is it the radiotherapy that causes this or chemo as i finished my 6 weeks radiotherapy 17th Dec

Had adjuvent chemo cistplatin and 5fu 3 weeks ago suffered horrendous mucositis

    And hospitalized with neutropenia sepsis

Cant help but think that the mucositis has made my throat worse

    Wendy xx

  • RT causes thick saliva because your salivary glands are damaged. Mucositis is just mucous membrane damage.
5FU causes inflammation of salivary glands which is one of the side effects. So that’s not helped.
You’ve had a double dose of salivary gland damage.
Salivary glands produce thick mucous and s watery secretion. It’s the watery stuff that stops leaving you with thick mucous saliva. It’s an imbalance.
    The chemo damage should improve.

  • Hi Wendy I had both radio snd chemo   It does get easier with tkne. I paid for auricular acupuncture and I swear it kick started my saliva into action. As Dani says you’ve had a double whammy of chemo. I am 3.5 years post treatment and still noticing small improvements even now.
