Busy day yesterday

Yesterday was a busy one for myself. Off I went to the mould room in the Beatsons Cancer Unit in Glasgow  for a 11.30am appointment. I arrived early as parking was meant to be horrendous, and it was!! No-one mentioned how tight the radiation mask is btw! That was a wee bit of a surprise, but I quickly got used to it. I asked about cutting holes for the eyes, but they said that they would much prefer not to unless I REALLY wanted too.
At 12pm it was then the simulator CT scan, complete with eyeless mask. All went well, including the weird feeling when the dye was inserted. A few minor adjustments then I’m good to start RT at the end of the month.
At 1pm it was a meeting with my Oncologist to discuss the acceptance into the immunisation clinical trial, Compare. The Oncologist was running late and I eventually left the Beatsons at 2.45pm after much form filling and detailed conversations re the trial.
i would like to thank all the Team in the Beatsons for being so kind and helpful with me. Thumbsup
It was then onto the Glasgow Dental Hospital to check a possible abscess I thought I had after getting 3 molars removed on Monday morning as a preventative measure against ORN that may occur due to the RT.( Google it)   I left there at half 4 and straight home for my dinner.  I hadn’t eaten all day!
That’s me now sorta ready for the 7 weeks RT & 3 chemo sessions. Only some blood tests and ECG’s to go for the Immunisation Trial & I’m good to go.
Let’s get this cancer beaten!! Muscle

  • A busy day. Thanks for the update. We’d like more if you’re up to it as time goes on.  There’s precious little here on immunotherapy and it’s a common query.
At least you’ll be well looked after and blood sampled I guess

Keep going and keep in touch, Frank.
    Best wishes

  • Hi Frank well done on getting through it. Yes the masks are tight. Top top on your first chemo day ehrn you go fir radiotherapy your mask eill feel tighter  scanner you are pumped fill of saline chemo then more saline. So time dependant you could have several litres of saline in you. The next day will be back to normal by your second chromosome you’ll be an old hand at it.Plus it’s possible a bit if weight may have gone from your face. Yes ORN is a possibility hence the extractions. Once treatment starts your days apart from chemo days  will be shorter you’ll spend more time parking than on the table.

Yes. It’s a funny thing, that , isn’t it. Yet there’s lots of research pointing to the fact that if you’re going to get ORN any time after treatment ( and it’s a lifelong risk) you’re going to get it teeth or no. Some centres are keen in lots of pre treatment dental invasion and others less so. Still I guess it’s best to get unhealthy teeth out of the way. I had to have a wisdom tooth out after treatment which worried me no end

  • Tomorrow I start my road to recovery for real. I will have my first dose of the drug Durvalumab on the immunotherapy clinical trial. A 1 hour IV session and because it’s my first time, I will be helld back for a couple of hours to check that there will be no complications. Then it’s Feb 14th for the start of chemo radiation for 7 weeks. Once that’s finished, its more immunotherapy once a month for 6 months. Updates & progress reports will follow in case they can help anyone on their own particular journey. ThumbsupMuscle
