Hi all, so started my treatment on Tuesday, I’m on 2 lots of different Chemo and Cetuximap? To try control this tumour! My last appointment with my oncologist on Monday freaked me out abit as she said if I wanted to know my prognosis/life expectancy that’s something we can talk about! I mean am I been completely stupid in thinking Il ha don’t years to live with this tumour, just don’t feel ready to leave my kids xx

  • Hi Sophie, you must be dumbstruck at the way she said it but she’s being honest I guess. Everybody is different. I would certainly want to know what the oncologists think but with the knowledge that theirs can only be an estimate. There are things to be done and put in place if I knew I didn’t have long. So sorry for you.

  • Hi

Everybody is different, but generally these cancers respond well to treatment with a very high % 5 year survival rate.  Lots on here are well past that date and doing absolutely fine.

I guess your oncologist was opening the opportunity for you to have the discussion if you wanted to.  I can't imagine that they would hide from you the information they felt that the treatment was not curative.

  • Hi SophieMarie

Don’t panic. I’m pretty sure that most of us think about survival rate and where that leaves us. Don’t jump ahead without the facts. Have the discussion with your oncologist otherwise you will continue to be in a state of extreme anxiety. You have your kids to think about and everything to live for so keep on with the fight.

No one can predict exactly what the future will bring.

    Sending you positive thoughts

  • Just an addition to my previous post. I have a cancer that is not curable but can only be managed. I was first diagnosed when I was 59 and am still ticking along at the age of 68. I had to adjust to some changes but have lived a fairly normal life. I have needed some additional treatment but as I said before nobody can predict the future. I am planning on having a few more years yet and I know you will have many too.

    Best wishes

  • Hi Sophie Marie As others have said I would have the conversation with oncologist, sometimes they can talk without them realising how frightening we can feel. You’ll not settle until you’ve spoke with her so ring her secretary and make an appointment.

    Its always better to know

Hi Sophie.  Maybe clumsily put, but have the conversation with your Oncologist if that is what you want.  Ours won't have that conversation with us.  He says it is early days in the treatment regime and as hopefully it is starting to work, there is no point at the moment.  We are alao in the same situation as you, husband's cancer is not curable, but hopefully containable and manageable. Hope things go well for you
