Hi, Bucephalus here with an update after 17 of 33 treatments.Neck very red but not painful, flaking or blistered.Using anti radiation cream Flamigel 4×'s daily and the 2 mouthwashes the same + usual Oral hygiene.Throat very sore making swallowing painful whether it be phlegm, warm tea or coffe, water, soft foods like rice puddings, scrambled eggs, soups, ice cream, yoghurts and custards etc. with certain hard foods eaten as normal were still possible using soluble Paracetamol plus Antacid& Oxetacaine(supposed to numb throat) until this last week. Now changed to soluble Co-Codamol,but about the same level of pain.Discussed it with radiographer at James Cook Hospital where I get treated and decided to leave as is until next review on Tuesday next week 28/09/21.Vocal  and other exercises for tongue and voice box now very painful and make throat worse,so will discuss next week along with the ones I can do.I have noticed that people are/were apprehensive of the mask just as I was,but thanks to Beesuit, who's advice to get the eyeholes cut out if possible(it was),I just took it for granted that I could not,so best to ask ones that know and not assume, plus having your CD's played since no Internet due to shielding,I am finding it,to put it one way,A DODDLE:-NO ANXIETY OR CLAUSTRAPHOBIA.Its best to use your CD's as well since they do not have a great selection,SO,if you have any like me you no  longer use, please donate them like I did today.I now use the likes of Spotify.Remember you have untold amounts of people to help you with any problems.Always write a list of problems or as I call them "NIGGLES",to discuss with radiographer, reviewers, this marvellous online community and don't forget your Macmillan nurses who are all only too pleased to help make someone else's life as comfortable as possible.ALL STARS IN THEIR OWN RIGHT AND I SALUTE THEM/YOU ALL..Well you all take care and keep safe.Bye for now.

  • Hi Bucephalus. Thanks for the update. You can only do what you can once the pain  kicks in but it sounds like you’re doing great. It might be worth trying a soluble aspirin gargle too. Gargle and spit. Have you got Difflam? That’s quite good for helping throat pain too. You can dilute it a little if it feels too harsh.
    Keep going you’re doing great

  • Hi Bucephalus. Good to read update. Yes I also donated unwanted c d s it’s the little things that matter. I looked at my mask as my friend she was going to save my life and she did. As for throat pain keep  on top of pain relief as much as you can. It’s around the 3-4 period when  everything Ramos up its possible at your review on Tuesday oramorph might be suggested. By time  treatment finished I was on 40 mil oramorph 6x30 mg cocodomol oxygen throat stuff gelclair for ulcers. But it’s worth it in the end.
    good luck Hazel

  • Hi. I'm only just starting this journey. I'm  not sure what treatment I will need as I only got diagnosed yesterday. I've now been transferred to a different hospital for a consultation on WednesdayUpside downCan I just ask you about radiotherapy treatment ...how long each session is and can you go home afterwards?. I'm also super claustrophobic and am already panicking about the mask and I don't even knUpside down if I need it yet Upside down.  Also where is your cancer..throat tongue etc.? I have a sore on inner cheek that's not heeled so that's where mine is and I've not seen anyone else on here that has mentioned that. Also I don't knownif it's spread as my ct scan was only last Wednesday and they didn't have my results back yesterday. Sorry so many questions..I've been awake all night in state of panic. Thanks and I'm glad to hear that you seem to be doing OK

  • Hi Julie. Bucephalus has laryngeal cancer which is quite different from cancer in the mouth and throat.

As far as I'm aware , Buccal cancer is treated with surgery only...... if it is in its early stages so please try not to second guess what's going to happen. I can see you are really scared which is understandable but please try to hang on till you have the results. You could try your GP to give you some mild sedatives to help you sleep. Lots of people haver gone that route. Waiting g is awful. We all get expert at it.

  • Hi Julie. Please don’t stress if you need radiotherapy each session is about 12 minutes and tes you go home each day.  Rarely people might be admitted but that’s rare and not in first few weeks. The radiotherapy team will get you through it so try to not isn if when you’ve had meeting on Wednesday pop back on and we will all try to help you. If course you can op on i between.
