We have a holiday booked at the end of December and my husband is worried about how he will feel by then...the doctor had advised him he should relativity be back to normality by then and it would be fine and actually a nice break for us...but we're not sure??? Has anyone else gone away this soon??
Halfway through 6 week treatment 30RT and 6CT, PEG fitted today (this was worse than he expected )
Again he is only 40 so his team are confident that he recovery would be good because of this.
Hi Bex
A holiday is a great thing to look forward to but I understand your husband’s apprehension. It does take some time to get over radiotherapy and the energy levels can be quite low for a few months. It does really depend on what type of holiday you are considering. Maybe a nice quiet holiday where you are not rushing around would work but a really busy one may be worth re-considering.
I went on a holiday where we stayed in a cabin by the beach about 2 months after finishing my radiotherapy and I found it a bit of challenge energy wise. My husband had to help me along from the beach back to the cabin because my energy was so low.
Also right after treatment I felt rather vulnerable and did not want to venture too far from home where I felt safe so the thought of a holiday was rather daunting, however this does pass.
I did not have chemo so add that into the equation and it might take a bit longer to recover.
Why don’t you wait and see how your husband progresses and nearer the time you can make a decision as everyone is different. I’m sure there is a cancellation policy for your holiday and then you can re-book at a later date if your husband does not feel up to it.
Best wishes

Thank you, it's to Mexico literally a do nothing but relax holiday (nothing new really to us!) Was his 40th birthday present, think the holiday company want an answer before 8 weeks then we incur charges..Happy to postpone though, just wondered what everyone's experiences was?
I would totally agree that a holiday is a great thing to look forward to. I can't comment on how your husband will feel by then as I've only had surgery and bounced back very quickly from the operations each time. Exercise as much and as often as he is able to will aid recovery, but do not overdo it.
I fear your problem may be getting travel insurance, especially for Mexico. Whilst I can currently get insurance to cover me excluding my cancer (and I am happy with the risks around travelling like that) many of the package holiday firms now have it in their Ts&Cs that you must be covered for all known medical conditions - and that may be the real stumbling block for you. That has killed my opportunities for holidays just at the moment as I can't get cover and DIY holidays are a big financial risk right now compared with packaged holidays.
Maybe consider something closer to home and booking last minute?? Maybe save the big holiday for a celebration of his birthday and a good recovery.
Hi I flew to,our apartment in Spain 8 weeks after treatment, it was the hardest thing I had ever done. I was only allowed to go as we were going to,our own things in our own apartment and could take my Ensure s with me and prepare any food I needed. To be honest in a hotel I would have struggled
We went as it was my husbands 60th birthday ,i did try eating out in a local restaurant to say it was a challenge I couldn’t eat a thing. I did get travel insurance plus the (EH1C) card but cancer was excluded. I would seriously think about postponing the trip Mexico is a good 10 hour flight with possibly a mask on . plus I will he still have his peg in you can’t say at this stage.
I had a n g tube but it was out by week 3 often pegs are in longer. Don’t mean to be a downer but I found it challenging on a 3 hour flight.. Like Peter says you can’t really travel without insurance long haul , if you do still want go you can try Staysure i now use them and they cover my cancer.
Again we are all different this is just my experience.
i did go again 4 months after for 10 weeks I coped much better but again was able to do my own food.
Hope this helps Hazel

Thank you, Yes I think it will be too much...its a long way I think he is trying to do it for the children more than anything as it's been a crappy year last year and he feels bad they are going through this with him, but they understand, we will get away eventually but his health is no 1 importance
Hi no problem. Didn’t want to sugar coat it. It was easier for me being able to do my own food etc. But it was hard. Maybe something in U.K. for a break there’s always something like Center parks or a cottage xx

Hi, Bex1983, I have to agree with the others, going to Mexico does seem a bit too much so soon after treatment. Also as far as getting insurance, this can be difficult to get and be very expensive.
Why not consider putting it on hold, and have a nice winter break in somewhere like Cornwall or Devon for now? All the best.
Regards Ray.
Hi hope all goes well. I had chemo and 30 RT too and eating and energy levels do take a bit of time would maybe think of Feb or April December just sounds a bit quick.. Good luck
