Husband's taste is starting to change rapidly now most savoury things have a bitter taste so his sticking maily to sweet things although his worriesd that he is going to ruin his teeth.

Also he smells is so heightened tonight like living with a pregnant woman! Lol

  • Hi Bex

I found the same and got the best taste from sweet things. It is a case of eating to live not for enjoyment at this stage. I found a bicarb mouth wash worked the best at this time (a half a teaspoon of bicarb in a cup of water) and I was also told another option was to use soda water as a mouthwash. This helped keep the tooth decay at bay during that time.

It’s just a matter of getting through and trying to keep the weight up at the moment and then your husband can think about healthier food at a much later date.

Best wishes for the remainder of the treatment.

  • Hi Bex as Sophie said just a matter of keeping the weight up when he can . I just went to a cake shop and bought everything and ate it and didn't make any difference . Nurse reckons I won't put the weight back on for a year or two. I use to have half a spoon of each bicarb and the other one which I forget. I also found hot water really helpful rinsing mouth first thing in the morning to get rid of stuff. I had a smell thing also which was burning and the an orange smell from laxido. I wouldn't be worried to much about the teeth just brush them . All the best Regards Minmax

  • Same here and over two years later my sense of smell is more acute.
Food is fuel at this stage

I found I could eat anything I wanted till about 18 months after treatment then the weight started piling on.
Just make sure he keeps his mouth clean. He won’t ruin his teeth in a few weeks

    Best wishes

  • Hi Bex,

As the others say pretty normal. Not as far down the line as some, but still find my sweet tooth is worse than ever. Really struggle with savoury, onions particularly. Smell also really heightened, not good when the front room looks like a florists. Aerosols an absolute no go anywhere near me.

Just help & encourage him to eat anything he can. I must have driven my husband mad with cravings and taste changes. Then lots of mouth cleaning afterwards. I lived on pancakes & ice cream at one point. Just kept smiling sweetly at all the healthy suggestions friends kept making, whilst inside my head throwing up!!

You'll find a way & keep popping on with any questions.

    Take care, Ronnie x

  • Hi Bex I’m 3 years post radiotherapy and my sense of smell is even more heightened . Yes bitter salty cardboard or any mixture is par for the course.
Even now sweet things are easier tk eat but I am meticulous  with teeth cleaning you need to leave cleaning until 30 mins after eating though.
I also see my dentist every 3 months snd have a fluoride varnish touch wood my teeth are holding up pretty well.

As Sophie has said it’s about calories for now snd a good while after. Healthy eating will come back.
