So I finished my treatment a whole year ago. I'm doing really well, or so I thought. My GP has told me that my white blood cell count dropped at Christmas and hasn't recovered. She phoned to say she is going to ask the hospital where I had my treatment what to do. That was 3 weeks ago. Am I worrying for nothing or should I get in touch with the GP again?

  • Hi Anne

I have never heard of neutropenia being a long  term side effect of head and neck cancer treatment. Have you had Covid because that certainly can do exactly that

Thank you Beesuit for replying. I'm not aware that I've had covid. I have been shielding when told, had both my vaccine shots and extremely careful of my contacts since the shielding ended, but I guess it's a possibility.

  • Hi AnneJules I had neutropenia while having my chemo and missed two sessions and was isolated for 3 days I think . I have since had low white blood cells which my doctor was investigating which the hospital said wasn't an Issue. Yeah might not be an issue for them lol. Well the doctor has just put me on a blood check every month. I thought it was odd getting a low blood count so long after treatment and so did the doctor but we shall see there could be many reasons I suppose . All the Best Regards Minmax

Hello minmax, how long after treatment did you develop the neutropena? I had a similar situation, it was very up and down during treatment but then stabilised. I managed to have 5 of 7 chemotherapy sessions. Thank you for reply x
