Hello all

I have my surgery on 11 April, robotic removal of a base of tongue tumour, bilateral neck dissection and removal of 2 wisdom teeth in prep for 6 weeks radiotherapy which should begin some time in Mid to late May.

I am told the surgery went well and I am grateful to my team, In the end they did not give me a feeding tube. My stay in Hospital was fine but there was a week where my pain relief was insufficient and once increase it improved.

I am home and trying to eat a reasonable mixture of soft foods, the pain is improving but the Nausea has been increasing. Bowels are now in operation again, and I now believe the Nausea has become my bigger issue in slowing my progress down as I find it hard to eat much at all in the last couple of days (food just not tasting good does not help). I get some Forticeps down, and a coupe of other small bits.

I suspect its the Morphine and perhaps other medications that are making me queasy, I have just started my first reduction in Morphine dose....

Just wondered if ayone else had big Nausea problems and how they were helped, or when they went etc

Many many thanks

Richard

  • Hi Richard glad surgery went well. Sorry to hear about the nausea I can’t help I was one of the lucky ones not even chemo made me nauseous. Hopefully someone will pop on with some tips, gradually reducing the morphine shoujd help.
good luck with next stage and keep us all updated.

  • Hi Hazel,

Thanks for your reply, shortly after posting my message I vomitted which of course helped with the Nausea, but has left me in unsure what to do. Normally when you are sick you avoid food for a day or so then start slowly again. Im not sure this time undergoing cancer treatment that maybe I should attempt a little something to eat. I had been expecting a call from my nurse coordinator tonight but it has not happened and now at 8pm I suspect it wont. I may try one of the on call nurses at Macmillan for advice.

    Thanks again for your reply

  • Hi Richard I would try a fortisip tonight especially if you are taking morphine never good on empty stomach. Wouldn’t worry  too much over one night if you can’t manage to eat. Unfortunately food not tasting good is par for the course it comes ,to eat to live not live to eat for a while. But we all get there in the end. Hopefully nurse will get back to you tomorrow. Did you get any anti sickness tablets ? Metoclopramide was my anti sickness pill .

  • Hi Richard. I had a lot of nausea throughout RT and I'm sure it was the morphine but I couldn't do without it. Metoclopramide did help and there are even better antiemetics so do ask your team. I learned to just swallow the feeling down and it did become manageable.

  • Hi Richard

I've been away for a few days so just catching up...  I am surprised at the nausea from just surgery.  I've now had 5 operations for this cancer and really not had that problem.  I recognise the pain issue though!

I very much understand the food taste issue.  I think most people associate that with the radiotherapy, but I have noticed it with surgery on the tongue.  It does get better over time.  My last surgery was just under a month ago and I still have difficulty eating, but it gets better each day.  It is mainly around swallowing and some scar tissue problems.  Fortunately I can work with that now eating solids but nothing with any crispiness in its texture; that's just too much.

I did not go onto any prescribed liquid food.  It may be that is what is making you feel nauseous??

Did you have (or are still on) antibiotics?  They can cause nausea big time.

Good luck and persevere with getting those calories into you as they are key to healing.

  • Hi Peter,

Thanks for your reply and apologies in my slow reply. My reducing  dose of morphine has also reduced the Nausea for me and so whilst the food remains with its taste rather spoilt I am experimenting and increasing intake day by day. From what I gather I need to keep this improvement going for the next couple of weeks as I will commence radiotherapy probably in about 3 weeks when I may of course get some of the side effects back.

    Thanks again for your reply
