Hi all as expected after chemo radiotherapy finished Nov last year first review picked up still something base of tongue had biopsy 2 weeks ago and lesion removed it was cancer dr called to day its unusual for primary to still be there after radical treatment he said he  is comfortable but not ecstatic about margins and does not want to do more major surgery as he believes will not change outcome plan at moment to closely monitor me every 6 weeks I'm not sure what to think I didn't ask any questions has anyone been through this does this mean I be ok or that they expect it to return with no treatment I'm confused as was expecting to discuss more surgery any help.

  • Sorry you’ve had all this extra worry Bradlou

I had an avid PET/CT 16 weeks after RT but thankfully the biopsy revealed no cancer

Your surgeon has told you that he did get clear margins ( though from what you say they could have been wider)

This  means that as far as he is concerned the cancer has been removed.
There is always a risk of recurrence which is why you are on close watch. All you can do is go with what your consultant says.

If you’re not happy you can always seek a review of your notes as a second opinion. Your doctor won’t be concerned about this at all.

Good  luck and keep us updated.

  • Good evening Bradlou, sorry that the cancer had returned, I can understand your concerns as I have had it return. All cancer operations and treatments have the risk of it coming back as they cannot guarantee 100% that they were successful in removing the complete tumour, my consultant used to say "if you imagine pulling out a weed there is always a risk that a small bit of the root is left behind hence the weed regrowing ". Perhaps he feels safe in what has been done and does not want to risk operating any further at the moment as it could cause further problems or damage, so by keeping an eye on the area as the best option. The trouble is once you have had a course of radio its extremely rare that it will or can be done again in the same site/area, although more chemo is still an option. Im positive they will pick up anything sinister with your 6-week checks. They will hope it does not return as we all do on this group, so fingers crossed for a positive outcome, best wishes, take care.
