Salivary gland cancer - issue with sister

Hi all,

Great to be here. I'm recovering well from my salivary gland cancer last year. Sister came to all hospital visits because I'm agoraphobic and couldn't go without her. So eternally grateful that she committed to this, taking time off work for the 3 days to travel to stay with me every 3 month. But then she refused to do the last appt last minute, despite having had the usual weeks of notice to plan ahead, not doing so, and then just refusing to come to the appt. I'm left scrambling to find a support system with travel and companionship because I am totally alone. She was my only support.

She is so angry with me for needing her to do that appt. It is vital I am seen every 3 month to check for the cancer returning. I have scans too. She refused to take my calls or answer texts. So when I stopped she started asking for the new date, as if nothing had happened. Passive aggressive, very angry that I will not do as I am told. She said that if she didn't hear from me by Fri she would take that as me no longer needing her help. That's fine. I will not be bullied by anyone. But then she threatened to do a welfare check on me. Totally out of spite because she has lost control of whatever power she thinks she had over me. I always made our time special with treats, apologising for whatever I had said or done to make her so angry (even after my surgery). Why would she help me if she feels such resentment towards me? I just don't understand what is going on. To think she can blackmail me into doing what I am told is ridiculous. We are grown adults.

Fingers crossed the hospital will accept my agoraphobia as a disability and offer me the solo car I need. The driver will come into the dept to hand me over to the lovely staff who are very understanding and accommodating. My GP's are having a meeting to come up with support as Adult Social Services cannot help me with trips to/from hospital. I simply cannot go myself because I am so afraid. My sister knows this and still tries to control the situation.

Being pro active is exhausting. When I have done all I can I am left with desperation. Anyone else experienced this level of control disguised as care?

  • Hi.  As nobody has answered you I am sure it is because none of us have experienced the controlling behaviour from a loved one that you seem to have.  So we have no suggestions.  I do hope that your GPs can offer a solution.  Maybe there is a local group that can help?  Alternatively do you have a Link scheme or similar in your area of volunteer drivers to get you to hospital.  I know many of our local drivers and they are kind and caring and, I am sure, would be willing to get you to the appointment.

I hope the situation does get better for you.  Hugs.

  • Hi Peter,

Thank you so much for replying to me. It is shocking that my sis is so controlling of me, using my vulnerability against me. But I now have hospital transport sorted and can add an escort if I find one. Hoping the GP, council and church can assist. But if not I will just have to go alone with medication to ease the anxiety building to full on panic attack. I used to be so very independent before being stalked. My life fell apart and reduced me to being a child again. So angry that my sis thinks she can take advantage of me. She hasn't carried out her threat of a welfare check, and has no clue that I have contacted all involved if she does.  I will always fight back when challenged. She should know this. She must be very unhappy in her own life if this behaviour gives her a sense of power.

    Thanks again x
