Hi everyone, Ive just come back to the forum after a bit of time away. I am a friend and the main carer of someone living with Terminal Cancer of the base of the tongue with lymph node involvement, alongside Dementia and other co morbidities.

My friend underwent Palliative Radiotherapy last year and over the past few months has developed a fungating mass in his neck at the site of the cancer. Over the past year, he has last almost 5 stone in weight and muscle mass. He's mobility and oral intake has reduced.

We went back go see the oncologist on Friday and now hes going to be having a week (well 5 days ) of intense Radiotherapy.

Has anyone been through this?

  • Hi

Is this to relieve pain? I ask because I have a friend who looked after her husband with a bleeding massive lymph node. He started a pain relieving course of RT but sadly passed away after a massive bleed at home. This was some years ago and they weren’t members of this community.

  • Hi Beesuit, my understanding is that it's to try and shrink the growth on the inside to aid with oral intake.

I actually had to take him to A&E a few months ago due to the lump bursting and bleeding

  • Oh that’s awful. Is there any provision for hospice care at all? It seems to be a horrid situation. Are you getting support from the GP or social care at all?

I remember you ousting some months back. It must be a struggle for you both
