Hi I’m new here.  Was diagnosed in January 2026 with HPV cancer in my right tonsil.  I completed 6 weeks of radiotherapy just 8 days ago.  Just wanted to ask if anyone has any tips regarding eating again.  I have been solely feeding through a stomach tube with FK drinks for about the last three weeks.  I’m feeling anxious as I have developed almost an aversion to actual food.  I have minimum pain, thankfully but still feel nauseous.  I wondered about time lines and what to expect from anyone else that has experienced this.  Thank you

  • Hi GJB well done finishing your treatment. Don't worry too much about not wanting to eat at this very early stage in your recovery. I remember the last thing I wanted was to eat, it has to be done slowly by trying small amounts of soft food, things like scrambled or poached eggs, porridge, rice pudding semolina, yogurt etc, and anything that can go down easily, add lots of butter and cream where you can for calories, which you need. It's all a matter of trial and error. Your body has had a real battering and needs to heal itself which can take a good while to do, you will get there just give your body time to heal. Stick with us, we are here to help, ask any question you have.

  • I was about 6 weeks before i could manage a cup of tea and a bowl of soup up to that i was having small sips of water only. I am now 12 weeks in recovery and can eat most things with the help of a glass of water for things like bread and chicken, start with soft foods like eggs and keep trying new textures on a weekly basis .One thing i cant handle is chilli or curry my throat is still quite raw .

  • It’s great to hear you’ve completed your treatment—well done! I remember when mine finished; it felt a bit strange after being at the hospital five days a week. I had a nasal gastric tube starting around week two or three of my chemo and radiotherapy, and I had it for four months afterward because I struggled to eat. Now, 18 months later, I still take a daily top-up of Actigain to help with my calorie intake. I can enjoy a variety of softer foods, especially with a bit of water. Just remember, everyone’s journey is different, so take your time. Sending you lots of support! Heart

  • Challenge yourself constantly with different foods...and drinks... what is not tolerated this week may be a little more acceptable in a week's time...6 months after treatment finished I was eating solids... small portions of minced beef and mash...lots of gravy... after a year I was happy with my taste and appetite... not near  100% but content with my progress... nearly 3 years since CRT finished and I can enjoy most things.

Guinness alcohol free was one of the first treats for me... could actually taste it...4 or 5 months after treatment finished.
