Hi all I’m just about to have my first MRI and Petscan since my treatment finished in January, however I have developed a cold and cough which is hopefully on the way out now. The scan is on Tuesday but I’m a bit concerned that my cough and cold will affect my results. I have messaged my nurse but as it’s bank holiday weekend it sure when I will receive a response, and wondered if anyone else has had this before?
Thanks

  • I had a cold for the last few days of RT but managed the relatively short period in the LINAC without sneezing or too much of a runny nose.  I guess you're biggest issue is being able to stay still for the length of the scan - MRI being considerably longer than a PET scan. If they want to delay when your arrive on Tuesday then waiting a few days will not be too your detriment.  They will be used to assessing people with colds and sometimes it is better to abandon a session than press on regardless.

  • Thanks Peter , I shall try the hospital tomorrow and let them know perhaps I will delay it which may be better in the long run as you mentioned, I would rather have more conclusive results. I have been doing really well to not pick anything up at all during my treatment but now I’m back out in the world I suppose it was to be expected at some point , just really bad timing , as I just want to know if my cancer has gone …. Ahhhhhh

  • Radiotherapy can leave us a bit more prone to cold-like infections, even more so when chemo is involved, the scan team will be well versed in how to deal with the issue.
