I have Stage 2 neck cancer and start 6 weeks of readiotherapy on Monday 26/1, I've had the "worst case senario" disscussion with the registrar re the side effects but I'm guessing that it all depends on the individual how bad they get?

  • Hi Moose, there is no real answer to this, as not everyone gets the same side effects, some get more some get less. Having said that most side effects are manageable with medication, so keep your team update on any you may get. The RT is no walk in the park, but it does give very high rates of cure, and like many on this forum you will get through it with a good result. Good luck for Monday'

  • Hi we are all different. What i will say  if you're offered a feeding tube please take it. My ng tube was literally my lifesaver it also enabled me to make a good recovery. Towards the end of my treatment all my med hydration and nutrition went in through it. My blog below gives yiu an indication of how I progressed.

    best wishes

  • Hi Moose

I had six weeks of RT for the same stage of cancer. Have a look at my blog linked below.
Acute side effects are just that, temporary. Your radiographers are your conduit to the rest of your team so tell them every day how you feel. Don’t shy from taking proper pain relief. Being comfortable makes an enormous difference to your confidence. If you are offered a feeding tube take it. You might not need it but if you do it will be a life saver.
Have a look at this thread too

  • I agree with Hazel and Dani 100% if you are offered a feeding tube take it. They can be a lifesaver, I know mine was.

    Ray.

  • Thanks Hazel, I have been told I will have to have a feeding tube from about week 3 as my treatment plan is classed as "Radical" I'm cT1 cN1 M0. A big fly in the ointment for me is that i decided to have a Heart Attack 3 weeks ago which has obviously held up treatment, I'm on 7 different tablets a day so I'm having to navigate through the maze of finding liquid versions of those tablets as well

  • Sorry to hear that. You can grind a lot if tablets add water and syringe into your feeding tube. I did with my blood pressure ones.
we’re all here to help no questions ti silly.

Blimey! Hope you are recovering. Did you have a stent? At least you’re not having chemo because they would have likely abandoned that.

  • Hi, I was in Aldi when I had my Heart Attack (those prices are outragous!!!!!) the manager called an ambulance which arrived in 15 mins and I was bluelighted to RD and E in Exeter where a team were waiting for me, 3 hours later I was in recovery with a stent fitted. The 2 problems are completely unrelated (in my case family history had me down for this to happen at some point) but I guess it was good that it happened before my RT started.

  • Get better soon. My husband had a heart attack two years ago. I took him to hospital and was roundly told off! He’s fine now and on only two types of statin.
