  • Hi

    Welcome

I had cancer in the base of my tongue. It’s classed as oropharyngeal, just like tonsil cancer. I was HPV positive with no nodal spread. I had six weeks RT and I’m nearly seven years clear.

  • Thank you for sharing and well done for your bravery did you have any surgery ?

  • Brave? No a bit. Just wanting to live and given no choice. I couldn’t have surgery but the RT did the job.
    How are you feeling?

  • Hello

my husband is currently in hospital after a total pharyngolaryngectomy for hypopharyngeal cancer. Recovery is slow because ten years ago he had surgery and radiotherapy for tongue cancer, so the neck tissue has been affected by the radiation. It is a bumpy ride with lots of ups and downs, and adjustment will be hard afterwards as he has not been given a voice implant as it was considered too much of an additional risk in the circumstances. I am sure he will be interested in your experiences, it is good to know there are others out there in similar circumstances.

  • Hi , l too had a pharyngolaryngectomy  and oesophagectomy at the same time l was 26 at the time there were many decisions to make at the time and not always easy as you are in the thick of it all and trying to think what are the best options l had chemotherapy first followed by surgery , l chose not to have radiotherapy post surgery . I also didn’t have speech valves but had speech therapy to learn oesophageal speech which was interesting asl didn’t have a oeophagus either

l would say take each day one at a time my speech improved the more l spoke as this helped strengthen my neck muscles , my job involved a lot of talking and l was able to go back to work this helped me both mentally and physically to recover

learning a new way of eating and drinking was another challenge without a oesophagus and having a stomach pull up

l am now 33 years post op and l am doing well

what l learned on this journey was patience and accepting of who l am

l hope this has been helpful to both you and your husband and l wish you well on the road to recovery
