Hello everyone. I have just been diagnosed, cancer in the Trachea. This is my second time here. First time was in 2019. Back then I had a rare cancer on my vocal chords. Because of that and the skill of my then consultant surgeon it was discovered that I had Thyroid cancer. In the autumn of 2019 the surgeon removed the cancer from my vocal chords. I got my voice back. Later the same year I had Lymph nodes removed. Finally in February 2020 my Thyroid was removed. From March 2020 the world wide pandemic stopped further treatment until summer of 2020, when I was treated by radio iodine therapy at the Christie hospital in Wythenshawe. By 2021 I was declared clear of cancer. However I have had regular check ups on both vocal chords and Thyroid. This has resulted in a new diagnosis last week. I now find myself starting another cancer journey.

  • Hi Ricky and welcome to the group.  Sorry to hear that you've had to join us having already had quite a tough journey.  Stick with us and we will listen and support as you need.  I suspect you already have a great deal of lived experience so will be quickly contributing to the group.

  • Hi Ricky.  Sorry that you've found your way back here.  Sending you a hug.  I'm also at the start of a second cancer journey, and the support and companionship from this group has been wonderful.  It's been a great help to me and I hope it will be for you too.

  • To  be honest Margaret it does not seem as scary second time round. I am forever thankful that our fantastic NHS has time to monitor and old chap like me. I am 75 and without the Thyroid monitoring I may not have known about the second cancer. I wish you all the best with your second journey. Keep positive and let us know how you are getting on.

  • Hi Ricky, I'm also finding it not so scary second time round.  All the best to you too.  I will look out for your progress.

  • Thanks for your encouragement Peter. The next step on this journey starts on Thursday this week. I have an appointment to discuss treatments. I am lucky to be supported by a brilliant team especially the Macmillan nurse.

    Regards Eric

  • Good morning Hazel

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I will do my best to keep you updated. It's not always easy to remember everything I was told last week. Thursday my wife is going with me as a second pair of ears.

    Regards Eric

  • Tough to be given the cancer news twice, but as you say it's a little bit easier to take in second time, we know the drill, not an easy road ahead but loads of good advice and support on here...

  • Good Morning Michael

Thanks for replying, with it being my second time I do know some of what to expect. I only have the greatest respect for our NHS. I had great care when I had Thyroid cancer.

    Regards Eric

  • It is interesting as I've been on the merry-go-round 3 times now.  At no stage did I find it scary, but the last time I was just frustrated and wanted to finish the job once and for all!  Fingers crossed, that is what we did.
