Hi all

Im 4 weeks into 6 weeks radiotherapy and chemo for tonsil squamous cell carcinoma.

Ive spent the weekend in hospital as I haven't been able to keep anything down (currently on a peg tube) due to the awful phlegm and crap lying on my stomach.

Does anyone have any advice or tips on how to sort the phlegm etc.

Im scared they may stop treatment and I don't know where that would leave me.

  • Hi.

    Well done getting so far

All these can help. Sipping tiny sips of fizzy spring water. Use a nebuliser a good few times through the day to loosen the sticky stuff. The hospital should help with this one or buy from Amazon. A humidifier in the bedroom can be useful. Add lots of kitchen roll to spit into. If all else fails hospitals can prescribe carbocisteine off label. Thus helps thin down the mucous.
Make sure you are properly hydrated too so that three litres of water as well as your food.
    Ask for a decent antiemetic

    Good luck

  • Hi Danis suggestions are brilliant we’ve all been there I’ll just add flat Diet Coke helped me as well as soda water. Plus gross as it sounds pulling the mucus out with fingers or orare small sponge swabs from Amazon.
well done on week 4 next few weeks will continue in a similar vein in e treatment finished it does continue to work so being prepared helps. Remember pain meds and laxido if on opiates

  • Were you still on solid foods or  Ensures/Fortisips via PEG?

    Michael

  • I went on fortisips at week 3 as I was struggling to eat.

  • Some patients can develop an intolerance to Fortisips or Ensures which can lead to vomiting, have you asked your dietitian or CNS about the possibility?

    Michael

  • I haven't, but im speaking to them tomorrow so ill mention it.

    Thanks

  • Hi sorry you arent coping so well, but its just a bump in the road and you're over half way already so try to stay positive
just throwing in the ring with others suggestions the food drinks can sometimes be milk dairy whey rich and some people have under lying lactose intolerance, if you have got a bit of lactose intolerance and its not being helped by you being able to water down the fact you're living on dairy/milk product this can actually thicken your mucus membranes  which will make the phlegm loads loads worse. I know its impossible cos its sometimes all you can eat for nutrition. You can get protein water drinks which are 90 calories if you could sub your water drinking for to get extra calories.
