Symptoms worsening whilst waiting for biopsy

I posted a few weeks ago after being told I have cancer of the tongue. I have since been told it has spread to neck/lymph nodes so not looking good. I had a 3 week wait for a biopsy under general (due next week). In the meantime the lump on my neck is growing at an alarming rate and food is getting stuck when I eat, but I’m being told there is nothing they can do to speed things along. I can’t help but think if it’s growing this quickly it must be aggressive, is likely to spread further in the time I’m waiting for biopsy and results and that my chances of survival are getting less by the day. I want to be here for my young daughter but I feel like I’m waiting helplessly to die.

Has anyone been in a situation like this with rapidly worsening symptoms where it hasn’t ended up as a worst case scenario? I was already beyond devastated with the diagnosis but this is making things feel completely hopeless.

  • Hi, you feel understandably very vulnerable at the moment. I, like many others, have been through this when you think a sudden little stab of pain is a sudden worsening of the cancer. Chances are it isn't. Patience is not by virtue either, but try and stay calm. Things will fall into place and, believe me, the doctors know what they are doing. I wish you all the best.

  • Hi Bumblebee.

You have my sympathy love, and like Patrick said, you'll be feeling vulnerable and anxious but I'll give you our story, hopefully to ease your mind about the wait.

My fella had the scans immediately on entry into hospital; no waiting periods for results, etc as the tumour in his throat had grown so large he had to have an emergency tracheostomy as it was effectively cutting off his air supply.  After this surgery he was unable to speak, drink or eat and nutrition was supplied by a Ng.  He was diagnosed stage 4 advanced and cancer from the primary had spread to his lymph nodes.

But, even after all that, he was deemed fit enough to go on the waiting list for further, much more extensive surgery.  He waited over two months before that happened and I was convinced the cancer would be running riot throughout his body during that time.  Apparently it didn't and although his recovery is slow, but getting better, we've recently been told he doesn't have cancer anymore.

So my lovely, try to put the worst case scenarios out of your thoughts as the doctors know what they're doing and you're in safe hands.  The lovely people here have your back and ask anything you want to as many will gladly reply.

    Sending hugs and take care.

  • this has been a great help for me and no doubt lots of others :) thankyou and wow !! what a journey for your husband and all of you as a family ,i hope the future carries on getting better and better for you all xx

  • im also going through the waiting and i must admit as time goes on i sometimes wonder is it getting worse ? Then give myself a good shake and say i would be getting treatment right now if it was worsening .Its just my imagination sometimes gets carried away lol you will do well and beat this same as i will :)

  • Thanks very much Susie, if telling our story helps others, then I'm over the moon.

We've still a long way to go but we've come so far. Just waiting (AGAIN) for the outcome of the MRI.

Until We've been given the all clear from that as well as the PET scan we won't quite believe it's gone. Not quite so anxious now, but it's still niggling at the back of my mind.

Take care of yourself and if you get chance update your profile to tell us your story, I would love to follow your progress.

    Hugs from west Wales xxx

  • I’d just like to add to everybody’s excellent replies that I was diagnosed day 1 and didn’t start treatment for 12 weeks. Still here and very well.
