Was diagnosed in March with hpv16 cancer at the base of the tongue and some impact to the lymph node. Luckily I was given a stage one and assigned 5 weeks of radiation therapy for 5 weeks. The hospital has some great resources so that you’re prepared for what’s coming. I foolishly thought “I can manage this, the side effects can’t be that bad”. Well, I was wrong. I can’t taste anything, I have trouble swallowing and the dry mouth is awful. I now realize the importance of rest, putting something in my stomach and the importance of very good hygiene practises. Prior to this event I had confidence, well grounded and regretfully took many things for granted. I now call this cancer event the great reset. I apologize for the ramble, I’m still struggling to figure this thing out…l
Hi there DB1960, welcome but sorry to see you here. There are a great many folk in this community that have so much shared experience and I’m sure their words of wisdom will be a great help and provide some well needed reassurance that things will get better. It’s true the treatment is brutal but the recovery can be torture.
My husbands journey is detailed on my profile, but briefly he was diagnosed with stage 4 tonsil, tongue and lymph cancer. He completed treatment on the 29th Jan. It’s been hard but he’s getting there now. Everything is crossed for his oncology appointment on Thursday where we will find out how successful the treatment has been.
There will be many people coming on line shortly who have tremendous tales of journeys under taken which will hopefully give you the much needed incentive to keep on moving forward. It does get better but it takes time.
Best wishes, stay strong, you’ve found a group that will support you through this.
Debbie
PS If you are awake during the night there is an Awake all night thread, where you can find someone to talk to.
Hi Db1960
Welcome to our little community.
I had the same diagnosis but had six weeks of RT
It’s a doable treatment but not easy as you’ve found out but it does get better. By the time a year, maybe less, has passed you will be back to nearly your old self.
I can’t say I had a reset as I knew exactly what would happen and I’ve never been the sort of person to tough it out. I just went with the flow. I don’t say this with any smugness but having looked down the barrel of the gun and been given a good chance to dodge the bullet I was just grateful.
I can’t say I’m any different these days, just six years older.
Stay with us. There is always somebody to talk to
