Hi Everyone.
I just thought I'd say Hi.
My husband is now only 3 days away from completing his 6 weeks of Radiotherapy for Right Tonsil Cancer. 1 x Lymph node involved. He has had 2 x Chemotherapies, Cisplatin.
Yesterday, he was admitted to our local Oncology ward. He had severe abdominal pain and his mouth was a mess with thrush. Neither eating nor drinking.
I'm very happy that he is now being cared for by the professionals. He now has an IV infusion in place for rehydration. Highly likely he will have a naso-gastric tube for feeding. I'm very relieved that he will be fed - and so is he. He dropped 11 lbs in 4 days.
He has no desire to eat as his taste buds have gone walkabout. It is painful for him to swallow. He tries very hard with his exercises.
Any tips or advice will be willingly accepted. Thank you in advance. He will probably get home on Friday, after completing his last Radio Rx.
Brenda.
Thrush is common and troubling, medication should clear it up, weight loss is also common as is being hospitalised to treat it. Appetite and taste going walkabout is the norm for most, 2 years post chemoradiotherapy my taste and appetite are almost back to normal, not quite. Difficult times for patients and their partners but things usually improve, just takes a little time, feeding tube should be a big help.

Hi Brenda welcome from me to our small community head and neck cancer our treatment s hard recovery can he longish but we do get great results fir many of us. I’m 7 years post treatment tonsil cancer with 7 affected lymph nodes my ng tube was my lifesaver he needs hydration and nutrition for recovery as well as treatment . Take it one day at a time make sure he gets rest and sufficient calories. Thrush caused by radiotherapy is coming only flucozonole got rid of kind. He needs to be scrupulous with oral hygiene as painful as it is it really helps. Gelclair helped my ulcers take them though. My blog below might help.

Hi - hello Brenda , I’m Nige, I’ve got tongue cancer and cancerous lymph nodes; I finished chemotherapy & radiotherapy on the 10th January this year.
Best of luck to your husband with completing his treatment - hopefully relief from the abdominal pains.
I’ve had and have oral thrush and appreciate how damned unpleasant it is - the gargling with saltwater and bicarbonate does help and brushing too - perseverance needed there.
My eating and drinking has been very poor for quite some time too, the pain in actually eating and swallowing, plus the sheer not being interested in for - taste buds non existent. I made up by drinking the protein drinks, with addd full fat milk which helps with the swallowing. You’ve not mentioned the dry mouth, fingers x’d that your fella doesn’t get t or too bad, but it’s a bugger too. Plenty of fluids and try oralieve dry mouth gel.
I hope you find being on here helps, there are amazing folk who will help you any which way and importantly know xavtly what you and your partner are going through.
Sending you strength and positive thoughts
Nige
