Hi Everyone,

In August last year my world changed dramatically when I was diagnosed with throat cancer.  After the 1st bout of treatment of Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy for 6 weeks in total, I've recently had the usual PT scan and along with MRI, where I was told the cancer has shrunk and I made the decision to return to work.

As u are all aware eating is now a challenge and like u all I have good and bad days with this.

My question is and I'm hoping you can help me with some advice on my current issue.

Since Friday I've not been able to swallow anything solid and I'm now struggling with any liquids so the fortisips is back through the tube. I feel like I've a build up of mucus in my throat and no matter what I try its not worked, I've tried gargling salt water etc, but no luck in clearing this.

Please help me with any advice you have and experiences you got in sorting this out

Many Thanks Gary

  • My Dad was given a throat cancer diagnosis three years ago  and he was having same problems with mucus. He was given patches to place behind both ears … hasn’t fully resolved issue but has helped

  • Thank you I will contact the hospital tomorrow to see if that will help

  • Unfortunately I can’t remember the name of them though. The ones he was given via The Marsden were clear and the ones he has now are plaster colour and the size of a one pence piece. Hope you find out what they are and they can help a bit

  • Hi Gary, I’m Nige, I have tongue cancer and cancer in lymph nodes - I finished my chemo and radiotherapy 19th January this year - I’ve had problem with mucus in the throat etc but also oral thrush - doesn’t help yhe swallowing. I’ve had and continue to have swallowing issues, solids are extremely rare , mostly mushy as it’s too sore and painful plus the mucus.

I had an infection in my chest that put me in hospital for a week and it took over a month to clear after 4 lots of antibiotics- last two lots s stronger one. I find swallowing in the mornings worse because of the build up - I gargle with salt water and mouth wash during the day - plus drink as much fluids as I can.

My difficulty besides soreness and pain, is the feeling of the fluid coming back down my nose - and I sometimes find it difficult to take a breath incase  fluid goes down the wrong hole, so to speak.

I was thinking that maybe have you thought about checking with your doc to see if you might have an infection of sorts? Also, do you take a nebuliser at all - that helps too. Don’t give up on the gargling, an lots bits you remove will be beneficial.

Do you ‘thin’ the fortsips to make them less thick - with milk or something like ?

    All the best fella, Nige

  • Thank you Nige, the issues you described are exactly the same as what I'm having but explained a bit better. I use a nebuliser at least of a morning and when I go bed. I also find now I'm having to go the toilet a lot more now as my diet is predominantly liquids. As for the pain I can handle it most of the time, I will try watering down the fortisips. One thing I have noticed is my voice is now something like kermit the frog or joe Pasquale depending on how I feel,

Thank you for the advice and may I wish u all the best with your journey

  • Thanks Gary - I’m back in having a biopsy on my tongue and other nodes, my petct scan showed up a few things - this time under full anaesthetic- so still riding the rollercoaster.
