Hi Everyone

Sorry I wasn't sure which section to put this in but felt I wanted to ask this question in this forum as I think we have specific challenges.

I started my treatment on Monday this week, for tonsil, tonsillar pillar and base of tongue cancer which has spread to the lymph node next to the affected tonsil.

I'm having 4 days of cistplatin chemotherapy and 35-40 radiation days.

I'm only on day 2 and despite not going outdoors and wearing a factor 50 uva/uvb suncream today I have got very rosy bits, just from sitting in a car on the way to the hospital. My radiologists have told me I need to be very  careful and need a neck cover and appropriate clothing etc.

So to cut a long story short, what are you all wearing for covering your neck in this heat? Also recommendations of comfy  clothes to wear, I'm only 43 and lost 11 stone 4 years ago so hate being completely swamped in layers

Sorry it's a long one! Hope you're all doing well

Kirsty x

  • I carry factor 50 at all times, and have a factor  30 Solar Sport spray in the car, light silk man scarf or Shemagh for my neck and a baseball cap

  • Hi - definitely put on the highest factor protection - for clothes, linen coz it’s loose and comfortable , is my suggestion - your skin will burn enough from the radiotherapy.

hope all goes well for you

  • Hi Kirsty a hat with a big brim that covers a lot if your neck. You can get a light silk scarf in wither a buff but not in this heat. If you e  not got a silk scarf ( ps I haven’t ) any lightweight scarf draped around your neck. You can rock the movie star5 look with a pair of sunglasses lightweight linen on yiur arms in a shirt or lightweight jacket. Saying that I’ve spent all day in the allotment in shirts t shirt plenty if factor 50 and a big brimmed hat.
I wear  factor 50 every day and spend 5 months of year in Spain sp cycling so it’s 2 nd nature to me to protect my skin. Get a hat and that’s a good start.

    good luck with treatment
