Hi everyone,I’m new here having been diagnosed with above cancer.I experienced pain in my throat and had difficulty swallowing foods hence got a referral to hospital and diagnosed with cancer after going through many test and scans and am now under the care of Guys hospital cancer centre awaiting chemotherapy and radiotherapy to start later this month.ive been prescribed morphine sulphate MST and taking 10mg mornings and nights and also 5ml morphine solution but there no relieve to the excruciating pain I’m getting at times.I wondered if anyone else has been diagnosed with this and how their managing the pain.Im a 64 year old male finding this so very hard to cope with and understand.
Hi 231160
Go back to Guys and ask for something better for your pain. Contact your CNS. There are other regimes that might suit better.
Are you adding paracetamol to your pain relief? It's a very underrated analgesic and works well with morphine
One piece of good news is that once the radiotherapy starts and your cancer begins to shrunk the pain should get better for a couple of weeks till the RT starts doing it's damage to the sensitive lining of your mouth and throat. This is a different sort of pain and what you have now should control it. MST and Oramorph certainly kept me comfortable. I had 20mg MST morning and evening, morphine every four hours with paracetamol in between so I was taking something every two hours.
Do you have laxatives too. This is very important while you are on opiates.
I hope you get somewhere soon.

Hi 231160
A warm welcome to the group , so sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis.
Lik Dani I too had Oramorph and Paracetamol to start with but sadly it didn’t help I phoned my CNS and my pain relief was changed immediately, a good laxa
Its really important to get the pain under control Your team will help you manage this . Don’t be afraid if they move you onto stronger drugs like Oxycodone or even Fentanyl patches …( was on Oxy first then put on Fentanyl during and after treatment )it’s all about trying to find the correct medication to match your pain.
For future reference always try and speak with you team/CNS in the week as weekends/bank holidays can be tricky(in some hospitals).
Stay with us . never a daft question only support , personal experience and knowledge.
Most of us find the anxiety and fear of the unknown seems to subside once we start treatment. If not again speak to your team.
Sending you strength in these challenging times

Hi 231160. Definitely give the paracetamol a go. I found it really helped me along with the morphine and fentanyl patches. The morphine alone did not seem to help anywhere near as much until I added in the paracetamol. It is definitely underrated.
