Hi. I am new to the group and trying to support my sister who finished 30 radiotherapy sessions and 2 chemo sessions for tonsil cancer five weeks ago. Other than sips of water she is still using her peg for all medication and food. She cannot bear the thought of food in her mouth as she says the taste is disgusting. She is also suffering badly with phlegm in her mouth and in the back of her throat which she can’t cough up or get it to go down. I understand both of these are normal but does anyone have any suggestions to help her. Many thanks.
Hi Support123, you are right these are normal, after the brutal treatment your sister has just had. As long as she is getting her nutrition water and meds via her PEG, don't worry too much about eating for the time being. Rinsing the mouth with flat coke has helped some people on here or try bi carb in water as a rinse. These things will improve with time.
Ray.
I use saline washes .
Weirdly food helps once you eat a bit as it gets rid of alot of sticky spit.
I try to think of it as an exfoliating thing. However its getting harder as the taste changes are such a challenge . So I get where she is coming from. Sorry if that's not much help.
I am only one week past treatment. And finding it a real challenge.

My Husband had the same treatment 2 years ago he did start to eat at about the 4-5 week mark but it was slow and took many months but he did it litte and often to the eating part eat what you feel like and always small portions and increase slowly. He had the same phlegm issue too and this did ease and go over time non of the medication worked just keep fluids up.
Not so good its now come back and spread to his lungs is now having chemotherapy and finding this very hard, he cannot breathe well due to it being in his lungs, feel not been given much help and advice from the hospital just stuff to read thats all very generic.
Yes saline washes are good. I did lost of steaming on my face as I also had mucous prob. This worked well. Must mai tain dental hygiene. So important. Good luck.
