Problem with Landlord

Hi, I would like to seek for advise regarding my situation. I am scheduled for chemoradiotherapy for my mouth cancer next week. We've decided to relocate for my treatment since we're living in a shared house before, we moved to a one bedroom flat. Despite our landlord's initial agreement to use the rent deposit to cover the remaining months until a new tenant is found, they are now requesting monthly rent upon our departure. Since my wife is the sole breadwinner, we can't afford to pay both houses. Need help. Any advise is appreciated. Thank you!

  • Contact the Macmillan support line st the bottom of this post. They can talk through your options.
The lines are closed now till 8am. While you wait have a good look at your rental agreement. That will help with your discussion tomorrow

  • Definitely seek proper advice.  I am sure the Macmillan advice line will ask you this, but it may be worth seeing what your tenancy agreement says.  Often past the initial period it moves onto a periodic basis, often one month.  If that is the case you should be able to get out after one month's notice.

  • Hi Online Hope , What you have requested is normal and your rent is usually protected under a government scheme which protects you and your deposit . I dont know all the facts but best get them right . All your trying to do is leave the property with your rent paid up to date , Not paying for time that you are not living at the property. I would talk to the landlord as he may not have access to your deposit etc . Try and keep it all amicable . Good Luck Regards minmax

I rent out a flat and you’re right. The deposit is held in a separate account inaccessible to the landlord till the tenancy is completed. The terms of cessation are clear in the agreement.
