Hi all,
looking for some advice if possible - my partner is undergoing radiotherapy and chemotherapy for tonsil cancer which has spread to lymph nodes in neck. He has 2 weeks left, however has not ate anything solid for over two weeks now due to pain/secretions. He is also struggling with fluids and shakes therefore has been admitted into hospital. He has lost over two stone, only managing 2 shakes per day and sips of water throughout. He had an NG tube inserted a few days ago, however was very sick with it to the point it came out twice. He is now quite traumatized by this and doesn’t want this back in again. He has asked about a stomach feeding tube, which they appear to be reluctant to do. Has anyone had any similar experiences or had any success in getting a stomach feed rather than the NG?
Hi. Sorry to hear this. I had a PEG fitted before starting treatment. I’m not sure how common it is to have one fitted during treatment as it is not always a simple procedure & can take a while to settle down. I think an NG tube is the usual route - Beesuit will know more. Dani?
Beesuit will know more. Dani?
Hi Rose. Yes they can fit a PEG during treatment but it’s not common. It might be that they may well keep him in till his treatment is finished at least. Was he offered a stomach tube before RT?

Hi Rose28
Im sorry to hear about your husband ,Im sure the team will be able to support his nutritional and fluid intake issues. I had a PIG fitted( llike PEG but different insertion process) day before treatment started(Chemo and Radiotherapy and like your husband was hospitalised ( due to sickness and dehydration 2 stone weight loss). I was in and out for 4 weeks but the team managed to find 2 anti sickness drugs that helped
.I was told a feeding tube can be fitted during treatment but as they normally take 2-10 days to settle they like to do them before it starts. I didn't want the tube initially but it was the best thing for me in the long run as 8 weeks post treatment and sadly still totally reliant on it. Also I now look back and know that the four weeks I spent in Hospital were essential to my recovery.
Tell him to hold on in there during these dark days it does get better sending you both the strength to get through this x

Hi Rose
T2Nim tonsil cancer....Chemoradio finished June2023
PEG tube fitted pre-treatment
Problems started for me during weeks 3 and 4 of CRT, rapidly lost 15kg and Radiotherapy team duly admitted me to Dundee Ninewells ward 32 to stabilize my weight, was there for 12 days....my stomach would not tolerate Ensure 2cal thru PEG/pump....vomiting it straight out for some reason....put on to Jevity feed which I tolerated, thankfully......now have a healthy BMI....eating normally....taste slowly returning.
Best of luck
Peter
I insisted on a PEG fitting before treatment; there was no way I was having an NG tube. They said they could do it during treatment but I can't imagine how they could get it down my throat if I cant swallow. I guess they would have to use one of the alternatives like RIG...

You’d be surprised. It just slips down. You get a sip of water to help it down.

Hi Peter I sipped water via a straw literally a sip and the tube was down I had it changed week 6 as well again the nurses are extremely slick at doing them.
