Hi my husband has got cancer in neck and possibly tonsils. He had operation Saturday to remove tonsils, tongue and throat biopsies and they removed some lymph nodes I think. He’s been in terrible pain, not eating, barely drinking but last night his neck swelled up, cricket ball size so we came to hospital. He’s currently in theatre having it operated on - drained I presume? Anyway im just waiting at the hospital for him to come out of theatre and we will know more then. Very scared for him but I know he’s in good hands. I’m sure I will be asking lots of questions as I read all your inputs. Good luck to everyone fighting this awful disease.
Hi Shazone
Welcome. I’ve glad you found d us. So sorry to hear about your husband. Looks like he’s got some fluid there after his op.
Apart from the other surgery tonsillectomy is awful for adults. I managed to dodge that but there are lots of people here who will vouch for that. Just make sure he has plenty of analgesia to go home with. Most here were in morphine.
I know this sounds completely overwhelming but things will get better and you’ll be able to face what’s to come once the rest of his plan is in place.
Stay with us. Ask anything. There is always somebody about with an answer.
Best wishes
Dani

Hi Shazone Welcome to the club that no one wanted to join but here we are and in your case on behalf of your hubby. I also avoided full tonsillectomy I had biopsy and the radiotherapy did the rest. Hope he’s out soon just try to remember head and neck cancers respond extremely well to treatment. Any questions pop in we’re always happy to help or just rant away on here
hugs Hazel ps I’m over 5.5 years post radiotherapy and chemo happily living my life.

Hi Shazone
Sorry to hear of your husband's trials with post surgery. As Dani says it sounds like some fluid build up. Many of us have drains for the first 24-48 hours to solve that problem. I was lucky and the drain was empty so did not have the fluid build up.
His throat will be very sore until around day 10-12, after that it will quickly settle down and soon be eating normally. Alas tonsillectomy follows a fairly predictable pain pathway. Just get all the painkillers you can into him. It is essential to remain hydrated. The dissection to remove the lymphs will normally prove less problematic although on paper the operation sounds much worse than a tonsillectomy.
