  • I'm so sorry, that must be really painful and upsetting. All I can say is maybe try to hold on to the fact that it will be worth it when his treatment is over and he gets the all clear. Sending love, and wishing you both strength and good luck

September 2022 aged 63 diagnosed with HPV associated SCC base of tongue T4 N2 M0. Chemo & radiotherapy for 6 weeks ending Nov 2022. Now over 2 years all clear. See my profile for longer story

  • Hi Cazza2190, this must be awful for you both. Try to look at it as part of the treatment in getting him back to health. You will be able to support him, by being there for him, and taking care of him. It will all be worth it in the end. Any worries or questions just ask, someone will always help if they can. All the best to you both.

    Ray.

  • Hi Cazza.

It's horrible watching somebody you love suffer. You feel you can't help but you can. Hold him physically or in your heart if he can't share with you. The pain will go and the suffering will ease. There is a reason for his surgery. He is going to get a lot of radiation and his teeth will suffer if they or his jaw aren't healthy. So knowing why helps ease the torment. It's part of getting well.

I couldn't share my pain with my husband...I stupidly wanted to spare him but all that did was make his own pain worse.....but he coped brilliantly. He cared physically for me without intruding and he was just there without fuss when I needed him.

We have a CARERS" ONLY FORUM you might want to join to talk with others and The swallows head and Neck cancer charity have a particularly strong carers section so have a look there SWALLOWS They have a 24 hour support line manned by a person not a machine

    Hang on in there Cazza

  • Hi Cazza I had my back teeth removed . Unfortunately this is part of the treatment and the alternative of leaving the teeth in and developing a horrid condition where your in constant pain for the rest of your life and potentially your jaw dying and having to be rebuilt from bone in your leg etc is a good enough reason to lose teeth imho . Not to mention helping to save ones life in the long run. It might sound harsh but the alternative is not an option. Tell him I bought him a  virtual pint and to stay strong , No Surrender All the Best Minmax

  • Hi

Thankyou for his pint lol.    Thats the forst time ive been told why.  No one really explained it ro us till bow.  Makes lot of sence xx

  • Hi Cazza It certainly helps when everything is explained. I was told by surgeon who said to me I might not need an operation but I was having one . They removed everything from the side of my neck and replaced it with parts from my leg. As it turned out they removed 33 lymph nodes but 2 or3 were cancerous so potentially saving my life I like to think , this was about six week after getting the all clear  Tell Hubby you love him and if he doesnt cheer up your not buying him corn on the cob for dinner . Can I recommend getting Audible books to pass the time . It really helped me

Radiation causes fibrosis (scarring) and part of that fibrosis happens in the blood vessels inside the bone of the jaw. This can make healing difficult or indeed impossible. If any teeth need to come out after RT there is a danger ( and it’s lifelong) that the bone doesn’t heal and dies. This is called osteoradionecrosis or ORN.

  •  Recently I spoke to my dental consultant in the hospital about having implants. He explained that there was a 2/7% chance of things going wrong. Now this could mean my jaw could die and they wouldn't be able to treat me because of a heart issue . Also I would need bone surgery reconstruction. I think I will pass on that one Thanks but no Thanks. Teeth are my last problem , Fortunately I have decided I didnt fancy doing modelling for ties etc after my neck surgery.

  • its horrible for you to see him like this…. its a terrible situation feeling so helpless …..

Im so sorry this is happening to you both..i feel your pain I also nearly pulled out from having my teeth removed I couldnt get my head round it and still cant if im totally honest . I read loads of reports felt very angry as some trusts seem to remove teeth quite often .I became very conflicted in the end and felt quite bitter but felt I had to put my trust in the team .

But I now see it as all part of the shitty process that I had to go through, there will be reconstruction options in the future for him to consider but for now its trying to get his head around the trauma of having his teeth removed and it is traumatic!

I hope the pain/swelling subside and gums start to heal ready for treatment to begin.Mine healed very quicky and I managed luke warm soup for a few days.

There will be brighter days ahead for you both …….
