Hi I’ve just been diagnosed with head and neck cancer . What’s next ? Can anyone give me some advice as I’m scared for what’s coming next Sob

  • Hi Gena and welcome from me.  I guess you're clinical team have discussed the next steps with you, but that may ask be a bit of a blur at the moment.  Whatever you do don't Google your condition or treatment as there is lots of bad information out the that is out of date.

There are a number of routes treatment may take including surgery and or radiotherapy with out without chemo.

I remember my early days and when I was baffled I contacted my CNS (you should have been given a name and number) and sat down with them to review whet I was and ask the questions.  I'd do that and then come back with specific questions for the group here.

    Hi Gena

    T2N1M0 tonsil cancer

I was diagnosed in Feb 2023 treatment started in mid April, finished early June.

Tough treatment but really it is the best option, in my opinion, lots of info to take in, consult with your oncology teams, take notes, dental appointments, mask fitting for Radiotherapy etc, others in forum have excellent blogs full of all the info you will need.

I am now well on the road to recovery, it is a long tough road but certainly doable.

    Good luck

    Peter,

  • Hi there I have neck and head cancer, I’ve just completed my 16th radiation session this morning. I have 30 sessions to do all together. I have cancer on the base of the tounge. I have had 3 rounds of intense chemo as well. But I also have a chemo once a week as well as the radio. Radio is tough I can’t really eat now and my throat is really sore

  • Hi

    Welcome to our little community.
There are lots of people here to help you along.
Tell us a little more about what’s happened so far. Then we can in turn help the best way we can.

    Hi Mango

Macmillan nurse (Gemma, Ninewells Hosp Dundee) was excellent in helping manage throat pain, have  you been assigned a Macmillan nurse?

    Peter

  • I’m still going through it mate got 14 more radio sessions left. Can’t eat now really everything taste awful, thick flem back of My throat. I’ve had loads of chemo as well. Are you back at work yet how long was it after your treatment you felt you was ok to go back to work

Hi and welcome to our little group. There’s lots that can be done about this. I was in exactly the same position as you five years ago. Unable to eat and with a very sore throat at the end of week three. Proper analgesia was a game changer for me. Tell your radiographers how you feel especially if pain isn’t being controlled well by what you are taking

    Best wishes

    Hi Mango

I just put 'Hi' at start of post

    30 Rad and 4 Chemo

Tough treatment, different timelines for most on recovery road, started treatment in mid April 2023 finished early June.

Had some time in hospital stabilizing weight. then had to have hernia surgery.

No work, retired, age 68....back playing golf in Oct and been to Tenerife on hols.

Slow road for most ...be we eventually get there...sometimes 2 steps forward then 1 back.

Good luck, hope you can enjoy Christmas

    Peter.
