Hi - I had cancer of the tongue which was operated on and lymph glands removed. I then had 6weeks of chemo and radiotherapy which has left me with a sore mouth, very little taste and mucositis - this is 16 months after my radiotherapy - has anyone else experienced this - and please tell me it gets better!!! Lizzie
Hi Lizzie.
I must say that my mouth was pretty ok at six months
Mucositis, do you mean thick saliva or mucositis which is the ulceration you have with radiotherapy? If you still have ulcers get checked for thrush
I sorted my saliva to a tolerable level by a year with acupuncture and chewing gum. I found a small water spray was better than artificial saliva. I still use a xylimelt st night and rinse often with BioXtra
Things improved pretty much over the following two years
Do you find you have trigger foods that make your mouth sore. I certainly did. I couldn’t have anything salty or any toothpaste with SLS in it.

Hi - thank you for replying!! I have thick saliva and a dry mouth!! Not really got ulcers and was treated for thrush!! Have just finished 6 lots of acupuncture too - will try anything!!!
I can’t eat hot, spicy, acidic, fizzy, alcoholic!! And just getting really bored with the limited foods that I can eat - eating a lot of eggs, pasta, creamy/soft desserts!!

Persevere. Lizzie. Even at nearly five years I’m getting small improvements.
Have you tried adding spices that do t have heat, like cumin which goes really well with slow cooked lamb.
Green herbs like oregano can seriously lift pasta Avocado on toast with a poached egg on top has lots of protein and is easy to eat. I discovered sweet potato chips cooked in the air fryer were a nice change too
Sorry if you’ve tried all these. Hazel RadioactiveRaz has a handy link to a cookbook for people like us. I can never find it. I’m sure she’ll be on shortly

Haha - yes can manage a nice bit of slow roast shoulder of lamb and Yorkshires soaked in gravy!!! I will persevere and look out for the cook book!!
Thank you - at least if there might still be some improvement I will hang on in!!
Thank you!! X
Hi Lizzie stick with it we still get improvement s even now st 5 years I’m getting tiny improvements. Sadly for me spicy, pickles and alcohol are still no nos. But everything else us as before Including my saliva apart from nighttime I still use half an xyimelt I think I always will. Most people can tolerate alcohol I wasn’t bothered about it before so it’s no loss to me.
Was the acupuncture auricular acupuncture as ordinary doesn’t do the kick starting I had it for 6 months. Every 2 weeks.
it’s a marathon not a sprint and some finish quicker than others.
I also found ready made lasagna easier thsn home made for a good 2/3 years. I eventually got my mince double minced from butchers as well ehuch made it more like a ground beef. Chicken thighs ein over chicken breast even now.
roast veg in Loire of olive oil with herbs and lightly cooked salmon. You might need a sip of warm tea to moisten mouth or in my case herbal tea then another tk get food down. Onky tiny sips.

Guess I’m just impatient!! I have to keep reminding myself that I’m still alive, back to full time work - and that life could be a lot worse!!! Thank you!! X
Hi we’re all impatient you’ll get there we get improvements when we least expect them I honestly never thought my mouth would feel like my old mouth but it does. I no longer say to long suffering husband my mouth is dry and he no longer has to hear me say it if that makes sense ! We get improvement s in increments I used to find if u couldn’t eat something I would leave it for a month or so and try again.
Many find a craft beer better than say regular lager.
Guinness as well I’ve heard people say. I used to dream of eating s crust baguette with cheese I csn now as long as the cheese is mild.

It’s the simple things - used to love my first cup of tea but can’t taste it so drink coffee and chocolate - and a lot of milk!! And crusty bread and loads of butter, a bacon buttie (which I can but not sure if the salty bacon isn’t good for my tongue), cheese on toast!! The list goes on!!! The gave me fish pie - with gravy!!! In hospital - is that even legal!! X
Hi Bacon butties take a while , many pork related thjngs are difficult it’s the tightness if the fibres I Di d lots of mushrooms in the bacon sandwich helps it slide down. Bread is hard for a good while but try a toastie anything )ng toasted is easier as the texture of bread changes when it’s cooked. Cheese on toast was one of my first things cheap white bread mild cheddar but always had ti cut the crusts off. Home made soups we bought a soup maker but a pan and blender is just as good. Just control the seasons make yiur own vegetable stock as a base .umm fish and gravy no thank you
Youll get there Hazel xx
