Hi,
I’m due to start treatment for 6 weeks on 23rd November for tonsil cancer, if you have any recommendations for creams, lotions, potions, pain relief etc and any do’s or dont’s I should follow I’d be grateful for your expertise.
Thanks in anticipation,
CockapooSue
Hi Sue
You’ll get all the creams and pain relief you need from your team.
They will supply a lot of it to start with then pass the prescription to your GP. Make sure you apply for a prescription exemption certificate which will last for five years. Your GP will help with that.
I added Aloe Vera gel which I put on my neck straight after RT
Tips? Talk to your radiographers. They are your conduit to the rest of your team. Don’t struggle if you are in pain. Ask for something better.
I started on paracetamol then added oromorph then long acting morphine. If you are taking opiates the team will give you a laxative. You MUST take it. Opiates cause your gut to stop moving and you will seriously get constipated.
Nothing much happened pain wise till the end of week two.
Stay as active as you can but listen to your body if you need rest. RT makes you very tired
Take your pain killers by the clock to keep in front of the pain. Drink lots and keep well nourished. You need protein and calories to get through the treatment and to heal.
It’s doable. A day at a time

Thank you for the advice, I thought aloe Vera after sun might be good or aloe Vera gel. I will endeavour to keep ahead of it all to make it manageable.
Oh, and here is Florence, who will keep mt spirits up!
Brilluant, thank you,I’ll do that, I’d heard E45 was really good!
Florence is gorgeous ️

Hi. Im 19 months post treatment for tonsil & lymph node cancer. Treatment was 6x chemo & 30x radio.
I was given Epimax cream for my neck. Caphosol tablets that you dissolve in water & use as mouth wash several times a day really helped protect my mouth from ulcers. I started on paracetamol then added in codeine then morphine. Your team will prescribe your meds.Always tell them how you are feeling & don’t be afraid of strong pain meds. As Beesuit says you must take Laxido or similar when on opiates. Have a meds schedule & take them regularly rather than waiting for the pain to hit. I had a PEG fitted prior to treatment & used it from week 4. Macmillan offer free counselling should you need it at any point. I found it very helpful.
Thank you that’s so helpful. I will have 30x radio. My right thyroid was removed with cancerous nodule but required no treatment, also had tonsils out but radio for just the right tonsil, I am not having a PEG fitted but will take meds on schedule. More bothered about the pain than the treatment, but will talk to the radiographers about this too.
Hi Great name and lovely dog. I won’t repeat what others have said my blogs below might help. I am now 5 years post for tonsil cancer with 7 affected lymph nodes. Treatment is hard I was 61 when diagnosed happily living my life now

You sound very positive and seem to have had similar treatment to what I’m expecting. I’m looking forward to next summer when it’s over, I know it’s going to be hard, but I’ll just have to Grimm and bear it.
