Recovering from tonsil cancer.

Hello everyone, thanks for having me here.

It's reassuring to know that I'm not the only one who's had these problems and reading how you are all coping with the problems we all have.

I was diagnosed in February 2022 after several months where my GP kept fobbing me off even after I was bringing up blood. They used Covid, amongst others, as an excuse for not seeing me. My wife eventually insisted that I went to the local A&E - I had an appointment arranged for less than a week later.

I was diagnosed with a 4cm tumour on my left tonsil. From then on in the NHS treatment was second to none. Radio and Chemotherapy did the job. Not much fun to go through, the nausea, mouth ulcers and all the other nasties that are part and parcel of the treatment was bad enough, but I still think that the radiographers playing Barry Manilow while I was clipped to table was the worst! SmileyHear no evil

The cancer is now gone, and I'm getting back to as normal a life as can be and learning to live with all of the after effects of the treatment. This is due to the work of the NHS, McMillan Support and support of my friends and family.

So for anyone who is recently been diagnosed, I would strongly advise that you take all the help you can get, stay positive and keep your sense of humour and you'll beat this thing - there is light at the end of the tunnel.

  • Hi E.F.

Glad to hear that you are now recovering well after your roller coaster ride. You'll never see Barry Manilow in the same light again. It is so good for others to hear that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Best wishes for your continued recovery.

  • Thanks Lyn.

To be fair to the radiotherapy team, one of the girls asked who I liked, then went home and got her boyfriend to put a Spotify playlist together for me. A nice touch - it shows how dedicated these people are.

  • Hi

Thank you for such an uplifting update. You are indeed right. The treatment is rubbish, the side effects difficult to cope with at first but they lessen over time and things do return to almost normal. I'm 4plus years and pretty good

  • This is a great post E-F, it shows that you can come out the other side of treatment with good results. Posts like this inspire those who are just starting out or having their treatment. It's really good you are getting back to normal, things will still improve for you, as time goes by. I agree with you our NHS is brilliant, I have nothing but praise for those who treated me. All the best.

    Regards Ray.
