I have had surgery to remove an HPV cancerous tumour on my right tonsil. I have read several of your stories about coping with the after effects of radiotherapy and chemotherapy and I’m so happy that I was given the option to have surgery or radiotherapy and I chose surgery. This was purely because of the timescale. I was told there would be a two week recovery period for surgery rather than six weeks radiotherapy and more weeks to recover from the treatment. My operation was five weeks ago and I was beginning to feel quite frustrated with my slow recovery. My speech has been affected which is frightening but I now realise that everyone is different and I must learn to be more patient and more kind to myself. I wish everyone all the best with whatever is going on in your life and best wishes for a speedy recovery for you all.

  • Try not to get frustrated as your recovery is not slow. A 2 week recovery period seems rather quick to me and I'm sure most people would find it takes much longer than that. A more realistic time frame is 6-8 weeks and even then it can take longer. Yes do be kind to yourself as you can't rush things. When you  have been a healthy person and then have an op it can be very frustrating that your body has let you down as it never has before. It takes a while to adjust to the changes but you will get there.

  • How fantastic that you could be treated with surgery alone. If you can avoid radiotherapy it's a godsend.

I wish you a speedy recovery
