Hi everyone I'm new to this forum. Recently diagnosed with base of tongue cancer with lymph node involved. I have been offered a trial for proton beam therapy. Has any one had this treatment. Really scared about the long term side effects.

  • Hi Lucy. Welcome to the forum.

    is this TORPEdO ?

If you put proton in the search function at the top there are quite a few posts. The jury is still out on whether the side effects are any less than with standard VMAT IMRT and most patients recover pretty well anyway. The set up time is longer so your treatment times are too.
I would be guided by your oncologist. Maybe they can link you up with others who have had it under their care.
For me, if I had advanced disease and needed a wide area of treatment I wound have gone for it. As it was my cancer was “only” T2 with no nodal involvement and the standard RT fixed me.
Let us know how you get on.
