Hi everyone, glad to be here. I will be browsing through over the next few days but I have a rather urgent matter I wonder if you lovely lot can help me with? My Dad has cancer that started in neck and has now spread slightly onto his face, he also has facial palsy affecting one side. He has had 2 exploratory ops looking for primary sites in his mouth and throat (nothing found), also had op to remove and test cancer. He has been left in a right old state. He has had problems with his throat and swallowing and has now been exclusively tube fed through a PEG since end of January. My Dad was always immaculate however he has been unable to shave or have a haircut since January as he has no energy but also has lots of pain around his neck, head an face. He would very much like to have a tidy up and I know if will make him feel better. I therefore ask if anybody knows of any organisations or support groups who offer a barber service to cancer patients. They obviously need to know what they are doing and be patient etc. He is based in Central London.
I know amongst all that we are going through it seems trivial, but I know it would have a huge impact on his mental well being.
Thanks for reading
Hi and welcome. So sorry to read about your Dad. I can’t help but just wanted to welcome you
I rather fear that nobody would even attempt what you’re asking save maybe his hospital. Could you ask his CNS?

Hi OTS
Sorry to read about your Dad. I can understand how he feels. I have facial paralysis caused by tumor on the Parotid gland. Had 35 sessions of RT and 4weeks in hospital with NG tube and after a good shower and shave I always felt human again.
I used an electric razor for a time but now back with wet shave. I am fortunate that my daughter tidies my hair though she is not a hairdresser but after a tidy up I feel presentable. Could you or a family member assist with shaving with electric razor. I did observe some family doing this while I was in hospital. Sorry I don't know of any organisations who provide this facility, but in Belfast we have a charitable organisation 'Friends of the Cancer Centre' whose volunteers provide many patient comforts. Would you have any similar groups in London? As Beesuit says ask his CNS. It always amazes me how these nurses can help.
I hope you get some comfort for your Dad When you feel clean and tidy you feel so much better.
Ivan

Hello and welcome, I’m so sorry for what you and your Dad are going through. Is your Dad being treated at Guy’s? I saw there was a hairdressers in St. Thomas’s hospital when I was there last week. Perhaps they can help?
Thank you AliceChristina I didn’t know that. He’s being treated at the Marsden. Travelling is difficult at the moment as he finds it hard to stand/walk but I think I’ll look that up for the future .
