Travel insurance?

I am hoping to start travelling abroad again this year. Any tips on travel insurance for people like us? (I’m assuming being NED that means I’m in remission? Different hospitals seem to use different terminology.)

All advice gratefully received.

  • Hi Mark no evidence of disease. We still have to declare for 5 years . I use sStay sure  we go away twice a year for 7-9 weeks at a time find them very reasonable fir now. When I get to 70 things  May change.

  • Hi MarkEL, I have used Insurancewith, they have always been more reasonable than others I have had quotes from.

  • I have been looking at costs and the very comprehensive screening that insurancewith do creates a decent price (compared to others) as OldBiker states.

  • Mark, as ever you have to make your own decision on risks.  I have insurance through my bank (Nationwide).  They will not cover me for the cancer, but accept me as a normal risk for all other issues.  No enhanced premium.  I did have a scare back in October when they though they found something untoward and insisted on a very short notice panendoscopy - it was negative - but I thought I may lose 2 holidays that I'd booked a while out.  I had decided that I would delay treatment and go on the holidays.  In the end no issues and I returned from Antarctica on Saturday.

The risk is booking so far out you don't know what may happen to your health.  In future I will do what I normally do and book last minute to reduce the risk of losing the cost of the holiday is my cancer does return.  With Antarctica we had no choice but to book so far out as spaces are very limited if you wish to land on the continent.

  • Antarctica! Wow! Not your everyday destination to put it mildly. How was it?

Thanks for the tips everybody. Very useful.

  • AMAZING.  We had time before and after in Santiago, Chile then flew south to the most southern city in the world before crossing the Drake Passage. It is almost impossible to describe the scene.  Icebergs the size of villages floating beside the ship.  David Attenborough wildlife moments.  Too many Humpbacks to count.  I never want to see an penguin again!  4000+ photos to review and edit down to an acceptable few :-)

  • Watching with interest, MarkEL!  We had to cancel our 6wk trip to Australia and NZ last October due to the diagnosis – I was about to do the insurance (really – all the stuff was on the kitchen table!!) when my husband announced he was going to the surgery as he had found a lump in his neck and off he went.  We’d only booked a week or so before.  But did get about two thirds back, which I was very happy with.  We’re going to book again as soon as possible (hoping for good news on 22nd…..) as #1 son and partner live in Sydney, very good friends live in Wellington and #2son and his wife live way down in NZ South Island.  Not been since 2020 and I’m desperate to go!!

I know Just Travel will insure (we took my over 80yr old mother in law a couple of times), but I don’t know about the particulars.  MiLaw just had to have the OK from her GP, but I don’t think she needed a letter as such, although I think she took one with her.  So for me, I think they will be my first call, will give the others a go mentioned here.....

  • I was chatting to a friend yesterday who had the same diagnosis and treatment as me (minus the chemo) 2 years ahead of me and he thinks the travel insurers aren’t very interested in the cancer side of things as it’s so unlikely to turn into something acute while away on holiday. He does have trouble getting cover, but that’s cos he’s had a heart attack since (unrelated). I’ve always had travel insurance provided through my Nationwide Flex Account so am going to approach them after what Peter said above.

    I will report back.
