I have been told by my dentist that I have cancer in my mouth he referred me to hospital on Thursday and I have app at hospital on Saturday

I don't no what to expect on first visit and I am really scared and anxious and I'm trying to be strong for my family

  • Hi Kate try to stay calm we’ve all been in the waiting position. Keep off Dr Google you’ll scare yourself silly. Try to remember head and neck cancers do respond extremely well to treatment. Did  dentist indicate where in your mouth he or she thought where the cancer may be? Your family will be there for you you can’t be strong for them they will need ti be strong for you as well. Rant on here we will all try to help you. I was 61 when diagnosed now happily living my life.

  • Hi Kate. I know it's hard not to worry but at least try not to panic. Your first appointment will likely be just a thorough mouth, throat and neck exam. Your doctor will likely book a biopsy and an MRI. More information will be needed to find out what's what. You should get all that organised really quickly.

Don't be tempted to explore the internet before you have a diagnosis. You'll drive yourself nuts. Afterwards it can be a useful tool but only a tool. It's not a doctor.

Where is the suspect lesion ?

Good luck and let us know how you get on if you feel up to it

  • Thank you so much yes I staying off Internet I will let you no how it goes thank you feel bit better now I no what to expect from 1st app

  • Thank you so much I'm so grateful just to be able to ask a question thank you

  • Hi Kate, It is hard to keep calm, but know that cancer isn’t the scary diagnosis it used to be.  The only thing I have to add at this stage is to say voice record on your phone or take notes at those first meetings.  And take someone with you so you have support and another pair of ears.  You may find it’s all a blur afterwards and hard to remember exactly what was said.  If you have any questions while you are there, ask.  It doesn’t matter how silly or daft or ignorant they may sound, if you don’t ask you’ll really wish you had!

  • Hi there. At my 1st consultant appointment I had a manual examination of my neck, camera up the nose & down the throat & a thorough look inside my mouth. History of symptoms was discussed aswell as info about my health, whether I driink, smoke etc. I presented with a lump on the right side of my neck after having had a weird sensation swallowing one day & having a momentary sharp pain in right tonsil. I was then referred for an ultrasound & needle biopsies.
Definitely take someone with you if possible. They can make notes for you to refer to later. It will probably all be rather overwhelming for you, & so another pair of ears is very useful. We are all here to help.
