Hello,I am Lynda 56. My dad 77, has been diagnosed with salivary cancer, also cancer ontop of his tongue right at the back. The plan is. Neck dissection. Take the cancer from his tongue and have a skin graft from his arm to put over his tongue. I was wondering if anybody has had this operation and could tell me how recovery was please. Also, should I buy a food blender to help him eat? My dad is a proud X-military man and doesn't allow anyone to go with him to any appointments! So any advice,I will be so greatful. Thank you

  • Hi Lynda and welcome. If you put salivary gland cancer in the search there are posts about it. Is the cancer on top of his tongue the same? I totally understand you father's wanting  to go it alone but do try to persuade him to go with him to his consultations. Two pairs of ears to catch everything that's been said. If you are helping care for him it makes it easier if you have all the information. Just a thought.

Recovery from both operations is challenging, there's no hiding that but he'll do it. He'll be in ICU for a few days, may have to be fitted with a tracheostomy for a few days and he'll have drains tubes in for a little while.

Has his team discussed with you what is likely to happen?

  • Thank you for your kind reply. I will try my best to persuade him to let me go with him to consultations

  • Hi , I had a stage 4 metastatic melanoma of the Parotid gland , I had surgery on the 14th Feb. 2020 , they had to remove my ear and 15 lymph nodes from my neck, they grafted an artery and skin from my thigh to cover where my ear used to be, they call it a flap.

I then had follow up immunotherapy treatment which was tough, I was on my own right through lockdown, but I'm good , 3 years in and no signs of any cancer returning. I would discuss his treatment options and rate very highly immunotherapy if its an option.

  • That’s great news PaulMichael. Melanoma does well with immunotherapy
