I was informed on 28.12. 2022 that the biopsy taken from my tounge was cancerous. I need to have a scan to see if there has been any spread to my lymph nodes. From what I have read if there has been no spread the treatment will be surgery only and I will not need any input from MD team. I know I will have a chance to ask questions at my next consultation but I would really appreciate your comments.
Received letter 12.01 2023 that appointment with consultant arranged for 20.01.2023 (all looking real now).
Hi Mick. It is exactly what your doctor says. If they can remove all the cancer with good margins and there is no nodal spread that should be it. Sometimes radiotherapy might be suggested anyway .There are folk in the community who had surgery only, some with a reconstruction and others who had radiotherapy as well. My neighbour just had the lesion excised.
Im sure the team will do their best for you xx

Hi Mick. Welcome from me as Dani has said hopefully they’ve got wide enough margins and you don’t need radiotherapy.keep in touch and let us know.

Hi Mick
I've only had surgery for my cancer. It was detected in my lymph node and surgery did the trick. 3 years since diagnosis and 2 years since the last operation - I'm doing well. Feel free to ask questions. All the best.
Thanks Peter. I am probably putting the cart before the horse as I don't know as yet if the cancer is contained. However, good to hear that somerimes surgery maybe the only thing required.
Sorry Peter I have just seen your post on another thread about you having several Operations!
I am a slightly unusual case, quite far off the normal pathway for these cancers. But what I said before still stands and I am glad that I was able to avoid RT at this stage, keeping in in reserve should I need it.
I was given a 50/50 on need for followup treatments following tongue SCC surgery etc. I got into my head that had not spread so was a bit disappointed when advised needed limited chemo and a cycle of radiotherapy. However, I realised that you would not put yourself through the surgery and not take the professional advice to fully deal with it in the way they know works.
GeneS I hope you don't mind me asking but did you need you need additional treatment because the cancer had spread?
