Awaiting diagnosis

Happy new year everyone, just spent my worst Christmas ever!
I was diagnosed with breast cancer 5 years ago and following surgery and radiotherapy have enjoyed my recovery and retirement. unfortunately back in august I developed a hoarse voice and was diagnosed first with laryngitis and then post nasal drip. After developing breathlessness and stridor, an appointment with ent consultant confirmed a mass in my neck and vocal cord palsy . An urgent ct scan has been booked for 14/01 but the waiting over the holiday period has been unbearable. The thing that concerns me most is the length of time since my symptoms started and the actual diagnosis which hasn’t happened yet. Has anyone else encountered anything similar and could offer some reassurance. Thank you

  • Hi Anne welcome to our community group. Try not stress about the time factor a few weeks won’t make any difference. I was put on the cancer pathway 15 May 2018 my treatment didn’t start until 14 July 2018. Ad we all know the waiting’s the worst  part  but there’s a tried and tested pathway. Now yiuve found yourself in here you’ve come ti the right place we’re a tight band and ask any questions someone will always reply. As yiu say having recovered from breast cancer yiur minds going ti be all over the place. Keep in touch in here.

  • Hi Anne. Welcome to the community but so sorry to see you here. I myself diagnosed my own cancer correctly ( I have a medical qualification though I’m not a doctor) at the beginning of August  and wasn’t in treatment till the middle of December and I am almost four years clear.

I’m telling you this not to ask you not to worry because you will and you’ve done it all before but to try to reassure you that a few weeks won’t make any difference.
Fingers crossed that they get to the bottom of this quickly.
Stay with us. There’s lots of help and support here. Let us know how it goes if you can xx

  • Thank you Beesuit, it’s the time span that has caused the most worry. I saw my gp every month for 4 months and I feel I’ve not given myself the best chance and should have insisted on a camera. It was such a simple thing when I eventually had it done! Do you know what I should expect after the scan? My breast cancer diagnosis was done and dusted in 2 weeks and hormone treatment started immediately

  • Thank you hazel, I’ll take all the hugs you have spare. It’s good to talk on here, my voice is very weak and it’s difficult to talk to friends and family when I have no confirmed diagnosis and they don’t understand the fear

  • Hi Anne after your  scan it’s possible they may want to do  mri then biopsy then pet Ct scan then the mdt team meet to discuss the next steps forward. Which could be surgery them chemo radiotherapy.mine was SCC HPV tonsil cancer with lymph node involment . I didn’t have surgery apart from  biopsy. Has cancer been mentioned  and there’s other possibilities?
. You are very welcome a hug is the least we can do. Feel, free to message in here we’ve mostly been there and done it. The waiting in a way is worse part its the fear of not knowing. Our brains go into overdrive.
    hugs again Hazel x

  • Do you know what I should expect after the scan?

Hi Anne. I should think that armed with the scan results the next step would be a biopsy of your neck swelling.
What came first. The breathing problems or the neck lump?

  • Thanks for the response. The ent consultant found “a concerning mass” which I still cannot feel. The breathlessness came straight away with the laryngitis diagnosis and I was sent for chest X-ray, electrocardiogram and 24 hour heart monitor. All that revealed atrial fibrillation and I’m now taking blood thinners and beta blockers to slow. my heartbeat,  If the consultant had not mentioned my neck , I would have been in a better place to be waiting . I can’t see any treatment until February at least and my first symptoms were in august

  • Well you’re in the system now. Things will move quickly after your CT. If the lump is only visible on camera then there’s likely to be an MRI and biopsy. These things have a well trusted route and things will speed up when they need to. Hugs xx
