Hi Mandy no youre making a lot of sense. Will tag a lady who has been through the same hopefully she will get back to you and she may be able to pass some more info in to you. Plus look on here https://community.macmillan.org.uk/members/panch
As long as they know about the warfarin I’m sure they can make allowances so remember to tell them all the medication you are taking

Hi Mandy
i won’t pretend that this is an easy process to go through but it IS absolutely doable
it is certainly major surgery, but if nothing else do try to eat as much protein as you’re able in advance. It helps healing.
I had a Hemiglossectomy over 2 years ago now and am happy to answer any questions you can think of.
I’ve also pulled together a document trying to prepare people for what the surgery entails.
Why don’t you pm me??
Hi Mandy. The surgery is tough - in face any treatment for these cancers is tough, but completely doable.
I've had 5 operations now for various bit and pieces relating to my cancer. They abandoned the surgery on my tongue so I can't really say how that may affect you. I've had 2 neck dissections and recovery from them was quite easy for me. That is not always true for everyone, but with most surgery there is initial quick healing followed by slow and steady progress over a period of many months to get to a place where you have recovered as best as you can.
Your surgical team will be on top of all the issues you have raised - don't be afraid to ask them anything so they can put your mind at rest. In many cases your anaesthetist will be your best friend. Hope it all goes well.
Hi Mandy - welcome to the team no one wanted to play for :-)
I had a 3/4 tongue removal for an aggressive SCC, double neck, flap from left arm, temp tracheostomy, grafts and the subsequent recovery. The surgery (is sadly) quite common and the process well trod. Certainly not high volume compared to other conditions but very well established and performed by leading consultant surgeons and teams across the world. Surgery itself was "quick" for me (16hours for them but again, normal - they have a lot to do). We are all different but based on averages you will be awake and aware pretty soon after the finish and probably in a bed side chair within 24hrs, out of special care in a week and working towards discharge in a total of 3-4 weeks (remember, just averages and you may be faster/slower and there is no right or wrong).
I have been surprised by some of the positive progress I made and annoyed/frustrated with some of the negatives.
Feel free to pm or ask on here, there are no silly feelings or questions.
