Hi, I'm Emma and my older brother began radiotherapy and chemotherapy for throat cancer this week. He is struggling to eat anything due to the nausea from the chemo and once the radiotherapy starts making his throat raw, he isn't going to be able to eat much. I was hoping to get some advice on meal replacement/food supplements that will keep his weight up to help him fight this thing. Naively, I'm hoping that we can get him 'bulked up' to give him a bit of a buffer later on. I have read up on Fesubin, Fortisip, and Huel, but it would be good to hear first-hand accounts of how other people have handled this. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

  • Hi Franciscana. I was in the same boat except the chemo four years ago

By four weeks I couldn’t eat so had a nasogastric tube which I used for all my meds and for food. The hospital gave me food replacement drinks called Fortisips. The other common brand is Ensures.
As far as chemo nausea is concerned just ask fir a different anti emetic. There is something that will work for your brother.
    Where is he being treated?

  • Hi Welcome to the community on behalf of your brother. Has a ng tube   Rig or peg been mentioned by his consultant. Prior to my treatment, staff said I have to sign a consent form for an NG tube to be fitted retrospectively. If I needed one and by week 3  I need to be NG fed I was also given Ensures  to swallow  ensure compact 2 kal  which gave 250 cal in 125 mil bottle. Plus 12.8 gram of protein. We often loose weight inspite  if bulking up. I did manage ti gain a little prior to treatment starting.
He should see a dietician at the hospital

As fir chemo ask fir different anti sickness medication we are all started off in the cheapest tablets and there are lots of others he can  try.
my blog below has links to other sites which may help

    Hope this helps

  • Thanks Dani, the tip on the anti-emetic is a good one and has been echoed by Hazel. My brother is being treated in France so the formulary is slightly different, but I’ll pass on the information. Once things get bad, he will have to use an NG tube, so we’re just trying to get ahead of the curve if we can. I’ll get him some Fortisip and Ensure to try. Did you have any problems with it not settling in your stomach? He was advised to avoid rich foods so maybe the milk might be too much. I see that there is a juice option that might be better.

  • Hi Hazel, thanks for the information. You may have seen my reply to Dani which covers some of the things you mentioned. He is seeing a dietician at the hospital, but I don’t they suggested prescribing any supplements at this stage. I will go back and ask him. Otherwise, I’ll be sending him a job lot of stuff from here for him to try.

  • Ah. I thought he might not be in U.K.  yes there is a juice option but I’m not sure it has as many calories. He is going to need 3000 a day. I was nauseous once the pain kicked in. I suspect it was the morphine but these replacement drinks are heavy on the stomach.  I’m lucky as I avoided chemotherapy

He shouldn’t need them at the beginning. The internet has loads of recipes for bulking up smoothies. You could try that

  • Perfect, thanks. I have a lot to research!

  • Hello. I had a PEG & used that from week 4 of treatment. I was fed 2-3000 calories a night of liquid food via a pump, prescribed by dietician Once I could eat a little orally again I stopped using the PEG & supplemented with Scandishakes
