Good morning, all!

I’m Steve – 59 years old – but feel like 90!

I was diagnosed with Tongue cancer which spread to one of my lymph glands in my neck. This was diagnosed back in April. I started 30 sessions of Radiotherapy and two chemotherapy on the 13th July before having all my teeth out – (not a pleasant experience!) . I also had to have a PEG tube fitted as I can’t Swallow.

12 weeks since the end of treatment I still can’t swallow, so am relying on liquid feeds via the PEG tube. (but still producing phlegm wich i have to spit into a pot all the time!)  I have an appointment later this month for a swallowing test (Video fluoroscopy) and Appointments for MRI /PET/CT scans also in November to see if the treatment has worked. The follow up to the scans will be early in December.

I am working 9-4 each day but feel so exhausted all the time, having vivid dreams and nightmares about the past and not being able to eat or drink is really getting me down. This seems to be going on forever. I just wondered if anyone has had the same sort of experiences as me. Everyone keeps telling me that I am coping very well, but I don’t think I am. Sorry to be so negative!

Thanks!Slight smile

  • Hi buddy, I'm almost a year post Treatment ,Throat Cancer,Tonsil and under tongue. Had 12 and a half hour surgery which was heavy and 35 Radiotherapy which has damaged my soft palate. Still can only swallow liquids and smooth soup as solids go into my lung with silent aspiration. It's a bummer for sure bud,I used to be a fine dining chef. But my only hope is doing the exercises so I do them. Maybe in another year I can swallow puree foods is my hope. Stay positive man and accept it may take a long time. But hey! We are still alive Brother! Cant beat that!! Wayne.

Hi Steve. I'll try to deal with this bit. Have a read of this article by psychologist Dr Peter Harvey After Treatment

Do a few copies and let your friends and family read it. It might help them understand how you feel

I hope you manage to get rid of the stomach tube soon and that your scans are clear
